I've had both brands (Gibson and Tokai). Tokais from 1979 until present and Gibsons from the '60s up to the current CS/Historic stuff. What I can say is the current Gibson Historic is top notch period. But it does not come cheap. Some of the Tokais come close and are better bang for the buck...

I guess my point is that if I paid the going price for an LS-380 I would expect it to have the fret edge binding. Not because of playability as the longer frets are arguably better in that respect, but as part of the whole "replica" detail accuracy.

The reason why the top end guitars have fret edge binding is that they are replicas, and the originals they are copying have fret edge binding. Its more expensive (labor intensive) to do and looks "correct".

I agree, some of the early Historics were wonderful, especially some of the Murphy guitars. All of the Tokais I've owned have been very good weight around 9 lbs. Not bad but not featherweight by any means. That does not mean featherweight Tokais don't exist, I just have not personally come...

All the LS-100 and above I've persoanlly seen have the brown "Lifton" clone case and all the LS-80 and below have the black with green lining as described, that I've seen anyway. :)

The (stock?) pickups in the guitar (1980 LS-80) are GOTO zebra PAFs - way too hot (8.61k N & 8.64k B) IMO, and the look of the double-row of adjustable polepieces is just wrong (should be one row slotted and one row flat slugs), but I believe they might be originals after doing some research...
