The Hard Puncher line seemed to have been introduced around mid year 1978. It was not featured in the 1978 Vol. 1 catalog which probably would have been printed in the fall of 1977. And so far the serial numbers are all on neck plates which is a practice that did not begin until mid year in 1978.
Also, the numbering system on PB basses is different than ST/Springy models. Apparently, the PB numbers began anew at SN 8000001 (presumably) and are out of sync with ST guitars which began in late 1977. Several examples of late 1978 Springys appear with what seem to be PB neck plates.
