Hey peeps,

I have looked through several threads and also catalogues to learn the differences in models. I must say Tokai was extremely detailed in the first few years explaining the specs and differences of each model.

So I would be looking to grab a Tokai Hard Puncher pb65N (natural finish) ideally or, a Tokai pb60 (sunburst) with maple fretboard. From the catalogue this model was in production from 79-82 I am located in the UK and don't have access to yahoo.jp sadly. I know Reverb, ebay and a few Japanese stores like ishibashi. Where else would you suggest I start looking?

Also is there a link to find out the going rate for models?

If a PB80 pops up I wouldn't say no but I presume they are like gold dust. It's interesting that the PB80 is a one piece body and also it was, I presume one of the first CNC machined basses of its time. Tokai seemed very very proud to have used this new technology back in the late 70's.

Yeah. It seems Tokai was the first in spite of people claiming forever that it was Fujigen.

I'm working on nailing down the year. To be continued.

I look forward to hearing your findings.

It’s interesting comparing how people now generally perceive a hand build instrument to be more refined and have a snugger neck joint compared to a cnc built instrument.

I’ve heard nothing but ultimate praise regarding the pb80. 80000 yen for a one piece body was a bargain back then.

In 1982 which was the last year of the law suit era. Tokai had 1957,1960’ 1964 and 1977 replica models. Adding the pb70 as well. I must say that is rather impressive.

Spent three hours on Google going through searches on tokai basses. It was sparse to put it kindly lol.

If you haven’t already, check out the catalog section. The 1982 catalog was the zenith for model diversity.

Things got weird in the mid 80s and the product line shrank drastically.

It is posted here.

PB80GS With Flamed Neck

I had posted it in this thread initially, but then realized you can't see YJ listings. Not sure if Jauce will work as a workaround?
Cheers. When I wake I’ll see how I can get to view YJ. I spoke to someone and vpn may be an option. Not heard of Jance before. This is rather new to me. Years back I would just buy Japanese football boots straight from rakuten. Long gone are those days lol.

This one looks good. Hope you get a chance to see it before it’s gone. Don’t see these often.

Hey, this is from Dan at bassjapandirect. I saw his video. He changed the true nut and he said he isn’t confident that after travel it will stay in place.

He did say they are rare but I’ll rather wait for be in a better condition tbh.

Had a busy day so haven’t been able to get on the computer.

Really appreciate you tagging me on this

Yep. I saw that in the description. Will let you know if any others pop up.

Nice one.

I have a 78 Yamaha pulser 400 atm. So the local upgrade is the tokai pb60, pulser 600 or fender pb70 which came out in the early 90’s (ash body with maple fretboard)

once I finish some editing I’ll sort out the YJ as I think that is the best place to find these basses.

Hope weekend was good.

Cheers for posting this. Jauce works so I was able to find the pb80gs you posted. I found this also.

The seller seems to not know anything on the technical side so asking questions regarding truss rod health, electrical issues, neck health, fret health would not be eventful. I see the brass saddles which shows it’s the pb60, rounded control knobs and the 4 screw tuners.

I didn’t know they did a black pb60. I thought it was sunburst or natural.

As the description isn’t detail would you class this bass as slightly buying blind?

I think you have to just use the pictures, look at the seller's feedback, and at some point you have to take a risk.

That particular bass looks like the original owner kept stuff, so that's a good sign to me. The warranty card and case are big bonuses and the strap is worth some money in the vintage market.

I'm looking for a bass and was going to bid on this, set my alarm. Then one of my kids started asking about something and I completely forgot. Went for a great price too.
I hate it when you get distracted lol.

yeah went for 61k yen. I see that you are in the uk like myself. With fees and uk customs charges it would have come to roughly £657.

I bought some Bartolini pickups from someone in New Zealand this month. I got hit with customs even though i checked and it stated i wouldn't.

which part of the UK are you located? I am in london
