I've heard some pretty good things about them and they have certain features which make them distinct, but I seem to come across variants or different features on them.

There are early 80s Epi Casinos with three screw TRCs, some with two. Some have fret edge binding, others don't...but they all have real MOP inlays.

So which is which! Lol. Is there a list of specs to mark em out by?

Hi, I've never seen a list of spec's and you're correct that the spec's vary quite a lot. If you find one your interested in I'm sure we can try and help identify it.

Snoop around online a bit..... google your topic title. I did and came up with this.... some good info from the owner further into the thread:

I've read this thread too, the Epi Casinos have 2 screw TRCs but at the same time don't have fret edge bindings. It doesn't fuss me too much in terms of fret edge binding, but the varying specs kind of throw me off leading to doubts in my head!

Does anyone know if Maxon pickups were in Epi Casinos up to 1986 before production shipped off to Korea?

Hi, yes all very confusing my 86 Riviera had a three screw truss rod cover and FEB. It would have originally had mmk-61 (Matsu-Moku Kogyo) pickups. See this link http://forum.westoneguitars.net/technical-f3/mmk-pickups-revisted-t547.htm

Can't vouch for how good they were as they're now replaced with dimarzio and schaller pups.

Lol Dave, so I am not crazy after all!

I've seen Epi Cas's with three TRCs and no FEB but they retain the 3 piece Maple neck construction that is apparently a Matsumoku trademark.

Is there some kind of mystique attached to blue label Epis? Seems to be a marketable tidbit by some sellers. Just curious as to whether it means anything or its just a "preferred" vintage pedanticism

Here's mine

I've never seen any blue label matsumoko made guitars. IFAIK the blue label Japanese are newer tribute elitist models like the john lennon casino. So I think the blue label just harks back to the kalamazoo factory.

I saw that Rivieria, sweet as pie! Thats why I;ve been considering an archtop for awhile. If things fall my way, I might gun for a Matsumoku, the Japanese sellers are pushing the prices up though...**** it
