I have a '77 ST42.
S/N 7000040
The POTs are not original and have been replaced with CTS.

Is there a production stamp in the pickup cavity?

That is a rare bird, and the earliest Springy I have seen.

Hope it’s ok to copy/preserve these images Cliff.

Note that there is no production stamp.

I was hoping to find one to get an idea of when in 1977 they started making these.

I wonder when the stamps began?

Is the SN 49 or 40?

And looks like these early ones don’t have production stamps. I need to look at figure out when that started.

Looks like they start out with no stamps.

Then model number.

Then color code and model number.

The first one I’ve seen so far with the production code is Sia’s ST42. SN 8002075.

Noticing early ST100 guitars with a “1” neck stamp.




Or a 9 or 6 on this ST60 SN 8000984



Or a 5 on Marcus Meimam’s SN 8000750

This is an odd one. The seller, mojostompboxes/tokaiaustralia, is calling it a 1977 Springy and saying the pots are pickups are original. Kind of odd since the GF pots are from the 2000s. And the tuners are for an ST42, he is calling it and ST50 and the E pickups were never used in an ST42 or ST50 guitar, so that is a mystery.

Not seeing a fretboard stamp?



Headstock repair as well. Wondering if this is one of the repairs from the factory that were recently sold off?

■Features
This is TOKAI SPRINGY SOUND ST-80GS made in 1978. This is a model based on the 1954 Stratocaster, with a 2-piece machined body, a 1-piece maple neck/fingerboard, a V-shaped neck shape, and three single coils with an E stamp on the gray bobbin. I am. It has very high quality construction, including all lacquer painting, 1-ply 8-point white pickguard, 3-way selector, and Kluson type pegs. The neck shape is so obvious that you can tell it's a V-shape the moment you hold it, and it has good playability. The sound is clear and bright, and each note is solid, making it a classic Strat sound that allows you to clearly understand each note even when playing chords. Although it has been played a lot, you can tell that it was used with care. There are no noteworthy replacement parts, and I think it is in almost original condition. You can still use it, so we hope you will consider it.

■Condition : There are scratches and dents here and there, dullness of the metal parts, and damage to the back panel and arm, but overall I think it is in good condition.
Neck: Slightly wavy (near the low fret, slightly warped in the opposite direction, near the high fret, slightly warped forward) Truss rod: Fully open in the direction of loosening
Frets : 4 to 5 String height above the 12th fret: 6th string approx. 2.1mm 1st string approx. 1.8mm
Electrical system: Gully when adjusting tone knob (both sides)
■Maintenance details : Overall cleaning , Fret/fingerboard polishing , Neck/string height adjustment , Strings There is some noticeable chatter when you run an amplifier through the 3rd and 4th strings, but the playing condition is good.

Wow..... What a body!

And the serial number on the neck plate is very dd. This low of a serial number should have been ink stamped on the neck. Possibly a neck plate that was meant for a PB since they used a different and later numbering system??
