So if I understand what you are seeing, that second number

Is not an order number
Is not a batch of wood
Is not even a body type
Is not a work group
Is not a shift
Is not a router

But it is more specific and gets down to something related to separate model numbers.

Am I understanding what you are saying?

I am curious about this grouping.

What makes these 55 models? The MR color is not an upcharge.

Edit: matching headstocks.

10=6N 10=5B ST55OW 1020828 (matching headstock)
10=6 ST65 MG 1020940
10=6 ST55 MG 1021223
10=6 ST55 MR 1021435 (matching headstock)
10=6 ST55 MR 1021437 (matching headstock)

I'm seeing that where there are more than one guitar with the same code, they are all the same type of guitar. ST80s are never in the same batch as ST50-60

ST50-55-60
ST80
TE80
SS70

eg all ST50-55-60:

5=12 ST YSO Block Logo L10325
5=12 ST60 MR Block logo matching head L11236
5=12 ST60 MB Block logo matching head L11444 (purchased 28th November 1983, from Guitarzan Middlesborough, UK)
5=12 ST60 SO Block logo matching head L12126 (switch code 341 = April 83)
5=12 ST55R MR Block logo
5=12 ST50 FO block logo ''5 digit serial'
5=12 TST script YSO 15970 (Fanatics)
5=12 ST50 OW no serial (fanatics with out the fanatics line - Stratmans)

although this is an odd one (I think it's more likely there's an error here):
8=2 SS36 YSR 9004394
8=2 ST80 9005792

I see that now.

Notice that only the neck fits the pattern, not the body. They have different codes.

And notice these with two codes. In particular notice this one. The neck seems to somehow make a difference. It has one code, the body has two, as if to comply with it. Or vice versa.

Are these all matching headstock SS70S models?

8=5 SS70 MR 1017962
8=5 SS70 MR Maple neck only
8=5 SS70 MR RW neck only

Are these all matching headstock SS70S models?

8=5 SS70 MR 1017962
8=5 SS70 MR Maple neck only
1017962 is matching head, the other two are necks I've come across for sale or sold & I've not made a note

I didn't think they made matching head maple necks but I've just found a few.

So looking at this list again, maybe the second number relates to the finish process in some way? Special treatment or something? Special orders, painted headstock? etc.

I bring that up because this grouping is matching headstocks and a special order/custom paint color (MG).

10=6N 10=5B ST55OW 1020828 (matching headstock)
10=6 ST65 MG 1020940
10=6 ST55 MG 1021223

I do think the 2nd number is simply a body or body/neck type.
Some go out straight away, some will go into stock.
If the plate is issued when the guitar goes out then this could explain some of the oddities.

eg:

3=2 2nd batch in March or whatever, they make a bunch of ST50-55-60s, some go out straight away, some will go into stock.
3=3 3rd batch in March is TTE50-55s
3=4 ST80s
3=5 SS70s
3=6 Left handed TSTs

The below is a mix of matching head and standard ST50/55s

5=12 ST YSO Block Logo L10325
5=12 ST60 MR Block logo matching head L11236
5=12 ST60 MB Block logo matching head L11444 (purchased 28th November 1983, from Guitarzan Middlesborough, UK)
5=12 ST60 SO Block logo matching head L12126 (switch code 341 = April 83)
5=12 ST55R MR Block logo
5=12 ST50 FO block logo ''5 digit serial'
5=12 TST script YSO 15970 (Fanatics)
5=12 ST50 OW no serial (fanatics with out the fanatics line - Stratmans)

Do you know why this one is an ST55 ?

5=12 ST55R MR Block logo

I'm not sure that's the same guitar as the pics, I usually mark it if it's got a matching head.

At first I didn't add ones without a known serial but then started to later on, so I prob missed that one off. Not sure.

Well this seems to be getting somewhere. Thanks for working on this!

Interesting to see this observation from 2012....

lifeline may have been onto something back then and maybe didn't realize it. He was thinking the second number was the day of the month but apparently didn't notice the guitars with the same numbers being the same as in LH models.

Hi Peter and all

Yes, the change form the equals code to dash (minus) code and others is another mystery chapter in the Tokai experience.

In a previous post I?ve shown that the first Left hand production was exported April 1984. L22746, L22816 LH Goldstar ST55L?s both have neck and body codes 4=8, purchased August 1984. The earliest maple neck LH code I?ve come across has month code of ? 2? e.g 21064 2=5 YSO V, 21221 2=5 BBZ, earliest LH maple neck serial 19539 from forum member Bazz, codes unknown.

Using these production months and serials as a reference, I wonder if the change to using the various different codes minus, dot etc is around April 1984 ? I am basing this on the following observations of L serial plate guitars only including guitars owned. I could be completely wrong though I would appreciate any thoughts and corrections:

Up to L23000 Neck and body codes appear to have the equals code

L23000 to L26999 Various neck/body codes ensue:
Equals codes (6=7,6=7), Minus/dot (6-7,6.7), dot/equals(6.7,6=7), minus/minus (6-7,6-7) and ?No In between code? (6 7, 6 7) i.e. No equals minus(dash) - or dot between first and second numbers.

L27419 (Owned by bobtastik) to L32000 All neck codes are minus.

Are there L Serials beyond L32000?

Regards
Peter W.
