Baffling- these types of stamps are in the minority but they make little sense based on what we know (or think we know!)

I got this AST50 on the 84 list which I wasn't sure about, but now I think it must be correct. Dot & = mixture.

This one is very interesting. Being sold as an ST50.

The neck has an "A" stamp. That means it has a lacquer finish. Which means it was made for an ST80 or 100.

Body stamp only has the "N", no "A", but the code is very close to the one on the neck.

"A" pickguard assembly with "E" pickups.

Looks like the neck is for a JB120 but the body is a 3 pice with poly finish, so mated pair

Note that on many of these JB models that there are codes stamped in the neck pocket as well as the control cavity.

The codes in the control cavity (under the brass ground plate) have the finish code.

The ones in the neck pocket do not have the finish code (presumably a space issue).

Often on these the lot numbers are different for the body/neck suggesting these fretless necks are not normal production pieces.

I think they both might be mated pairs, 4=1 is an ST80 build in 1981. There seems to have been a lot of neck swapping going on with JBs.

ST80 MRR

This one is odd. I would have guessed it was a 1981 guitar like mine (SN 1013537, 4=1 MR A X). The production stamps are from January. If it were January 1980 it would have a fretboard stamp. I think it’s December 1980/January 1981.

Checking other 80/81 ST80 code/serial pairs, the last one we have for 1980 is this one:

12=13 ST80 GS 00010396

Pretty close to the oddball above, like there were still some 1980 neck plates in the box in January '81, which also seems to be a high volume month (=17th lot that month), so there was probably a lot of hands reaching into that box, eventually reaching what was still at the bottom of the box.
