Mick,
I guess there were LS-60,65 AND 70 models with different pickups, check catalogues for more info. LS-60 is lesser specked guitar,3 pice maple top and 2/3? pieces mahogany back. LS-65 was solid 2 pieces maple top and LS-70 was idem but with a sycamore(maple related) veneer you hardly noticed if you look outside and "better" pickups MK-II,nice pickups.
My own expierence regarding '05 LS-60 and LS-80(similar to '03 LS-70) was I felt last one as more balanced and with a more refined sound, and I would assure hardware could be better quality. I would get a LS-65/70(flamed venner and my first Love Rock courtesy by Yoshihisa Tsurumi(Universe)).
Checking on-line catalogue http://www.tokairegistry.com/images/catalogs/tokai20009.jpg it seems all three models had MK-II pickups,it changed in 2005.I?ll check for paper catalogues to see it better when at home but it?ll take some time.
Regarding pickups, if you feel your guitar is good you always can change pickups.I did a lot of research in Tokais trying several pickup brands from Seth Lovers(which I like) to Classic ?57s(nice but not so suited for Tokai I tried on) to Haussels Will Boggs rewound(really good!) to Habaneros(I like these a lot),to Rolph Pretenders(really great pickups I love!,old school sound, and as a Seth Lover but better, slightly microphonic but in a good way) to Lollar Low Winds (I also like these very much) to Wolfetone Dr. Vs(these stay in my Reborn nowadays),very very musical with a lot of clarity and on the bright side of a PAF sound but great.
I got surprised about Duncan Phat Cat(P90?s in humbucker housing). These are very nice and a fantastic option to tame a strong bottomed Les Paul guitar.Liked these also.Great for rythm work.
