Hello. I saw this guitar online, a guy offering it for $600 and claiming it to be a TL-62 custom model from the 80s.
I am really tempted but a bit unsure. I cannot find much information on this specific model online, and apparently they were still produced into the 90s (possibly with a dip in quality?). I have heard good things about the 80s revival Fernandes, but I'm not so sure about the 90s ones.
I am wondering is there any way to tell if this guitar is legit and date it. Also, I would love to know a bit more about this particular model. Any help would be much appreciated!!

I just saw the stamp in the neck pocket.

I believe that stamp indicates that it’s a Fender body.

Fernandes model would be an RTE.

So it’s probably a partscaster? Fernandes neck, Fender body.

Hello. There's one on Reverb
https://reverb.com/item/17824188-fernandes-the-revival-62-custom-telecaster-double-bound-vintage-mij
It says about 90's. Should check more on internet.
Do not know about the sound but this greeny looks nice :).
Yeah but in this link the seemingly exact one(same serial number on the sticker) is listed 82-85. https://reverb.com/item/17711039-fe...ustom-telecaster-1982-85-2-tone-tobacco-burst
I guess it was sold second-hand multiple times under different ownerships and maybe neither of the owners were completely sure about the dating..?

Thanks, that makes sense! Also, do you happen to know what the CR stamp in this pic stands for? I've seen some other Japanese guitars with this stamp in the neck pocket.

CR stamp? Oh I see it now.

I’m not sure. I’m not a Fender collector. Probably check a Fender forum? They would probably know.

Hmm not necessarily a partscaster, but probably not a "TL" either. I've seen Fujigen do this where they would take a body thats already been stamped for a certain model and use it for a different one, as long as it would fit the specs.

Crossed out "PB" stamp (usually reserved for Fender/Squier) on a Seiwa SC-100 bass.

Ask for pictures of the neck heel, the actual model number is often to be found there.

The 90's are a flurry of non-Fernandes specific models, with production by the regular Fender makers Fujigen and Dyna. Stamps vary over time, and sometimes it looks like discontinued Fender models. At this time, this line wasn't really Fernandes' bread and butter, but something I think they felt they needed to have in the basic offering.

The correct model for this is R-7, BTW.

I saw someone call it a 1995 R-7 in a facebook group.

Would love to know how you get 1995 from that serial number, 017700, but may just be knowing when certain things happened?

Or maybe they are guessing?

I found this catalog that Iain shared in 2012, but have not found the catalog that it came from.

“The R Series encompasses the best of all musical worlds. From smooth, mellow sounds to edgy twangs, the R’s smooth versatility can nail virtually any sound. The R-7 is available in Black, Candy Apple Red, Yellow Sunburst Old and Vintage Metallic Blue. The R-6 is available in Natural and Vintage Natural with Maple fret-board, The R-5 is available in Black, Cream White and Red.”

So now after reading that catalog description, I’m wondering if the finish that looks like green in the pictures is actually vintage metallic blue that has either yellowed with age or cigarette smoke, or it’s actually more blue than the pictures suggest? Just wondering out loud.

Good observation. Might be one of those blue finishes that turn green through normal UV exposure. The residues in the neck pocket do look more bluish and they used a blue marker to color the edges.

I play an early 90s Samick that did the same

That was probably me... The serials in the 90's are purely sequential and apparently affixed at warehouse level. That means that some guitars will have build dates that are earlier than the sticker. An example of this is the ZZ Top promo tele they made for the Antenna album, which mainly has serials in a certain range, but appear way later as well, apparently being some remaining copies. The dating I'm using is mainly based on known events and dates from models (i.e from pots, neck dates, certificates on limited run models etc). It can't be 100% exact, as there may be out or order use of the stickers as well. I've indexed about a thousand of these for the "bigger picture". Thus, I often say late XXX/early XXXX when numbers are close to the borders of the ranges I've so far defined as years.

Same as those 80's bluebursts... many have turned green over time. They had some green finishes, but not for these models.
