Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum, & I've enjoyed reading many of the posts. I think it's great that so many of you are prepared to share your knowledge & experience of Tokais with us less experienced folk. So I'm hoping that some of you will help me identify the Love Rock I recently bought on eBay.

As you might gather from the name, I'm more of a Fender player, but I thought I'd try a Les Paul type for a change. I had a Tokai SG back in the late 80s/early 90s, but I swapped that for an ESP Series 400 Strat - the SG just didn't balance properly for me. Recently I bought a Korean Tokai Firebird, but the balance on that was even worse, so I sold it to someone who seems to love it.

So I used the money to buy the Love Rock. It's Korean, finished in Cherry Sunburst. Here's the link to the eBay ad:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=012&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=220113733552&rd=1&rd=1

If one of you kind people could tell me how I can upload pics, I'll do that. What I'd like to know is which model is it? People on here rattle off model numbers that mean nothing to me, & all I know is that it's a Love Rock. I assume it's one of the models that feature an alder body and maple neck? The ones that sell for around ?300 in the UK?

I'm getting better on identifying the Tokai Strats & Teles, but the Gibson clones still confuse me, so I hope one of you will help me broaden my knowledge.

It's a surprisingly good guitar, better than I expected for the money, & seems quite well made. I've tried various Epiphones, including a few 330 copies, & they always felt cheap and sounded nasty to me. This Tokai has a quality feel to it. I'm beginning to understand why so many people are Tokai fans.

Thanks,

Mike

I'd suggest that it is a Korean made LS48.

Yes, specs are as you mentioned. Even looks like one of the cases we used to have a bit a go....maybe bought from us in the first place.

If it's in good condition i say ?200 is a steal!!!

Upload pics by going to a hosting service such as www.photobucket.com
It's free and it's easy. Once you load your pics with them, you can either copy and paste the image itself or the link directly to your forum posts.

Yes it's in good condition. Thanks for the tips on the pics, hope this works:

So the new LS48s are Chinese, and the same price?

Mike

LS48s are being made in China at the moment yes. The quality is very high and no different to Korean. In fact one or two of the paint jobs are noticeably better.

Every Chinese Tokai that I've come into contact with to date has had shoddy headstock painting..EVERY ONE..!!!
That's Explorers,SG's and LP's.
The Poly finish is fairly dodgy as well...but only on close inspection.
Usually covering the neck binding in places.
They play fine and generally look ok.
