I don't post a lot here, because I'm still waiting on my Tokai (although I'm cracking, and I may buy my LS150 this week), but this project is intriguing.

I had some thoughts. While I think this is all a great idea, it seems to me that there's a lack of standardisation, or the lack of a guiding hand - in terms of content, not the project itself.

What do I mean? The huge variety in styles of photography is going to affect the coherence of the book. Furthermore, is anyone going to be the writer/editor - taking varied texts from all the contributors and giving them some sense of continuity?

Not everyone here is a skilled writer. Not everyone here is a skilled photographer. Wouldn't it be a good idea to have someone with professional writing experience edit/rewrite (perhaps even interview by email if comparable facts or impressions are missing), and have at least some guidelines for photography?

For example, guitars might all be photographed in the shade of a white wall - something that anyone could find to create a look for the project. Perhaps a picture editor to interact with contributors to get a uniform look?

It seems to me that the good will towards this project is a great opportunity. It may not end up as The Beauty of the 'Burst, but why shouldn't it have a similar coherence and continuity?

This is a work in progress and it is evolving as we speak. This week I was asked to provide photos of my pink Goldstar to help with completeness and I sent a bunch today to Iain. He's asked me for pics of the paint code in the control cavity and I will be taking the pickguard off this weekend.

Here's one I took today

It might end up better than the beauty of the beast cos it's gonna be in colours man 8)

I know what you're alluding to about the text, but we've been waiting years for the forthcoming book on the Fender tribute guitars from Tokai by Peter Mac who has the most knowledge on the subject outside of Japan.

Singemonkey, thanks for the comments. I think we have to accept that 'we are where we are' on photos. I think if they were all photographed with a white sheet / wall behind it would be a little dull and you would still get the variability in focus, detail, lighting etc.

I am really trying to capture all the colours that I can and I have tried to post the screen shots as a guide to the range of shots that will fill 2 pages e.g. full length, body, front and back headstock, body codes, serial number etc. If we wanted everyone to reshoot it would be a pain in the butt and delay completion. Besides some of the photos are of guitars no longer owned by the respondants so we would lose them. It is not a professional book or tokai catalogue but a fan book and I think it will be a great reference to the range of strats they made. I think some of the photos are excellent and a snapshot of what we have been able to collect together.

Im also hoping that it will inspire someone to take on Volume 2 on Les Pauls.

In terms of text I am trying to gather standard info like Owner Name, forum name, model name and number, pick up type. This all goes also 4 boxes at the top and bottom of the pages. for the front page / intro I was going to put together some words and share them with the forum where we can get alternative proposals. there has also been suggestions of asking permission from magazine text to be used. I will post something later.

I'd be interested if anyone else who is contributing feels the need for greater consistency in photos. It is not as if we are looking to sell to anyone else outside the forum however I have had some people want a copy but are not contributing.

If this book were to go on sale in the shops, then yes - I would prefer a more professional finish. (I'd at least have mopped my wooden floorboards.) But like you say, Iain; this is a book dedicated to the fanboys/girls (are their any women on this forum?) and the fantastic guitars that Tokai made and personally I think it keeps the vintage tokai flame alive.

I was thinking this morning that if in 20 years time when my two tokais reach the ripe age of 50 I were to sell them, as a seller I would pay a little bit more money for them if they came with a book in which the featured.

At least one in the UK, yes, & I'm sure there must be more.

I usually take pics both with & without flash, as the stronger light brings out some colours better.

But it might look a bit strange if the lighting is different for each guitar? Would it be best to standardise on either with or without flash?

depends on the ambient light. a clear photo is a clear photo, I will put the best ones submitted in the book and as I said many have already been taken and people may not be able or want to take the photos again.

Does anyone think the screen shots, even though they are not high res, don't look good?

It's been a long time since I looked inside the Goldstar.

Does anyone know what difference the dot makes, if any, to the mystery code numbers? I'm so used to seeing the = sign, but I'm sure I've seen dots before.
