Hi guys,

Just got an offer from a guy who has a tokai springy sound with a 4 digit serial number on the neckplate. I was wondering wich model this is. Guy says it got U pickups but in the 1982 catalog i find only st-80 or above has a 4 digit serial? But st80 or above comes with E or dimarzio pickups? Here some pics

Something is off. A 4 digit that low should be from very early in 1982 (February, March, April), and that would make it an ST80 if it is original to the guitar. It would have a soft V neck and E pickups if all is legit. So either the description is off on the neck & pickups or something has been changed on that guitar I would say.

I would want to see the body & neck codes and pictures of the electronics.

Btw, it looks like it could be a soft V in the one photo of the back of the headstock.

And the finish looks like it could be lacquer.

2 piece center seam alder body.

I would confirm that the seller is accurate on the neck profile and the pickups.

From the surface it looks like a 1982 ST80GS.

Re-wired. So those pickups are not original.

The rest looks OK as long as the neck is a soft V.

Not everyone can tell what a soft V is since they are not super common.

You can tell a lot from seeing them, and that may solve the mystery.

Thanks a lot for your info. So the electronics are original but only the pickups they changed? Strange..

The st80gs as you mentioned should not have u pickups?

That's not what I said.

The pickups have been changed if the rest checks out.

Obviously someone replaced at least one of the lead wires on one of those pickups. And they wrote the resistance on them which tells me that they were probably not in that guitar and were then put in accordingly.

That picture doesn't show enough to tell much else.

If there were a photo of the side of the switch showing the code on it, and a photo of the pots & cap that would help.

But the big one is the code stamps on the body and the neck. We can tell the most from those.

And no, an ST80 would have E pickups. They were removed if that is an ST80.

Okay if its not an original st80 its not really interesting for me.

He has no pictures of the body or neck stamps.

This is the only one i have left.

That switch is not original either.

If the body/neck/neck plate are legit it is still a hell of a guitar. Depending on the price it would be worth grabbing.

Okay and thats because it has a nitro finish and v neck etc probably or maybe? Because if its a st50 or 60 i see them pretty much thats why i was looking for a st80 are above. What would it be worth in your opinion if the parts you mention are legit?

I try not to get involved in deals between buyers & sellers, but if you just look at what ST80s sell for you can get an idea.

Totally stock, an ST80 tends to sell for $1,300-1,500 and up depending on condition. Sometimes less if you are lucky.

Lots of nice pickups & electronics out there that you would be free to put in that guitar. You could hot rod it.

This is what it would have had in it as far as pots & switch

I don't really but there are definitely some JV collectors on here.

You can post a separate thread in the Other category. I am sure you will get some help.
