The Tokai should be '79, and the Grandy should be 1989 or 1990.

Hard to know with the 90xxxxx SN if it is '89 or '90. Seems like I found pots in one and it looked to be a 90, but I would need to look for that to be sure.

What is the SN on the Grandy?

The last Les Paul custom in the post is mine! SN 9001787

Cool.

That Grandy is not a 1979 guitar though. It is 1989 or 1990.

That double split diamond first appears in 1985.

Those GOTOH tuners are not seen on Tokais before 1985

There are no Grandy's that I have ever seen before 1985.

As an aside, there was a disruption in production in 1985, and LC models vanish after 1985 and don't reappear until 1989/90.

If you still have the original pots in SN 9001787 they should have a date code that could potentially sort out if it is 1989 or 1990.

I lust after a Custom. How are the neck profiles ? Chunky is good, slim taper not so great 😃. Thank you for any information you can share.

So I was just looking through the LC guitars with 90xxxxx serial numbers that are either 1989 or 1990.

SN 9001845 has March & June 1990 pots, so that serial number and higher were likely made in 1990 because the pots are made before they are put into guitars and these seem to be original to the guitar.

The LC guitars made in 1985 with pots from years later are due to a disruption in production related to financial problems at Tokai in 1985/86 specifically. So that was exceptional. That was not happening by 1990.

Further, the other 90xxxxx SN double split diamonds seem to be pretty close to this serial number. So if the pots were made as late as June 1990, and likely the guitar was made a month or two alter, then all of the 90xxxxx guitars are likely 1990 builds.

It looks like Mavis and Piare may be store brands for Ishibashi as well as M’Seeker.

I’m still not sure who the Grandy labeled guitars were made for. Working on figuring that one out still.
