How to date your Burny

What about SGs ? I was looking to buy one that the seller says MIJ, but I have my doubts. It has Super Grade on the headstock, but 3 screw truss rod cover, no pics of control cavity, or pup cavity. and a serial #FG04071986

Mmm but old pots can always be reused in later guitars. I do not think Burny was still making the split diamond in 87, did they?

Apparantly they did.
I can't follow your thinking process here. If the 7 from 1987 is an old pot than that split diamond Burny should be later than 1987..
If you look at the pics of the white custom split diamond on page 1; it has the 9 pots. So Burny were even making the split diamond in 1989, which corresponds with the catalogs BTW.

Chris, just take a look at your guitars or at pics on the web of Greco's from 82-92 and Orville's & ObG's up to 92. 9 out of 10 times the pots correspond with the year of the serial number. The one left is a pot of the previous year. So yes, older pots were used but I have never seen pots older than one year in relation with the serial.

Without taking the pups out could you tell me what pups should be in it and a model number ?

Do you mean the black custom you posted above?
RLC-60 & VH-3 pups. From the top of my head they should measure around 8.1.

Couldn't help myself so took out the neck pup and took some snaps.

looking at other pics around the forum the pups could be L8000's???( no numbers on pups)

And the number at the base of the pup cavity is 1. 28 and a faint what looks to be a 6 which is not visable in the pics, would that mean 1986??

I bought the guitar a few years ago off Greg in Wales, he used to be a regular here. Posted under a word starting with ULI**** I think?

Cough!!! UITA actually. Tape on the split diamond, fake long tenons, VH1 stickers, home made stamped pots and a steady hand to re-drill routing shapes. That's just a couple of things I do to stir things up a little!!!!

Also looks to of had the pups out at some stage and some fresh looking solder on the pots ? Maybe had some other pups at one stage then the originals replaced?

Might be starting to buy into your method... pots that I removed from my split diamond RLC-65 are all clearly stamped 87 below the 500K ohm stamp.
