Fernandes and Burny Made By Tokai (1978)

It looks like Tokai made some Fernandes and Burny guitars for a short period.

In fact, it looks like some of the earliest Tokai Strat and Les Paul copy guitars were made for Fernandes.

The ST examples I have found have the early inked serial numbers.

And the Les Paul's are both:
- the early large font serial number ink stamps (with plain head stock & "Burny" pearloid inlay)
- and later smaller font serial number ink stamps (with stone logo).

From what I can verify with known Tokai characteristics, so far it looks like this relationship may have only lasted a very, very short time and was limited to three models FST50, FST60, FLG60.

Will update that assessment if more verifiable examples pop up, but so far that is all I am seeing.

The Burnny's have an odd piece of contrasting colored truss rod filler wood in the neck tenon.

1978 Burny FLG-60 (Tokai LS-60) Solid top

This is FLG-60, which was sold in 1978 under the Burny brand.

Please read the following description carefully and use your own judgment before bidding.

Production of Burny's Les Paul type began in 1976, but in 1978 Tokai began manufacturing the Les Paul type, and only the lower model FLG-60 was manufactured by Tokai. (More than 70 seems to be Terada Musical Instruments)

Therefore, although the head logo is Burny, the guitar itself is the same as the 1978 Tokai LS-60, including the PU etc.

Compared to the 1979 LS-60 that is also on display, there are slight differences in the body angle and body shape, but this is the difference between TOKAI's 1978 and 1979 LS-60.

The top material is a plain top, but it is a solid center 2P top with a slight bird's eye pattern, and the back material may have a seam, but to the untrained eye it looks like a 1P top. (Please check the pictures carefully as we cannot guarantee it) You can see the remnants of the days when materials were luxurious.

So far I have only seen guitars from 1978 with definitive Tokai characteristics. I have heard there are some from 1979, but I am still looking for examples with internal photos.

Things changed in 1978/79, where some Fernandes/Burnys where made by Tokai.

In the 1978 catalogue you can still find a Burny FLG-60 with Les Paul script and with Burny and not Tokai features, so something happened in 1978, because there is, as far as I know, no 1979 catalogue, and the only Burny from 1979, I know of, is the Tokai made FLG-60 similar to a Tokai LS-60 "Reborn Old? They are similar in many ways except for the name on the headstock. They even have Tokai black inked numbers on the back of the headstock. All I have seen have got 1978 (800 xxxxx) serial numbers, though they may be 1979 Burnys.
