Here’s another oddball.

A 1984 LS60 with a flame top. Looks like it might be sycamore?

Maybe this one was destined to be an LS80, but once they carved the top it revealed the defect you can see in the pics.

1984 Tokai "LS-60"

It is Tokai LS-60 made in 1984 in the Love Rock head silk screen logo period

The LS-60 uses a center two-piece top made of solid maple, which is rare in the LS-60 ......

Top really doesn't look like typical (solid) maple (acer saccharum) but it does look a lot like sycamore (acer pseudoplatanus) veneer.

Not very attractive IMO but different strokes for different folks.

Yep. I just translated the chart in the back of the 1984 catalog and it says "tiger cross grained laminate 2 piece" on TLS60/80/100.

I'll be removing that post from this thread out of respect for reborn old's thread and the other member's guitars on here.

So this guitar was part of the changes in the mid 80s, obviously using laminates on guitars that previously had solid tops.

Below are translations of specs from the 1984 & 1982 catalogs.

Note that the word that translates as "veneer" actually means solid wood, and not laminated the way we use the word veneer in the west.

Also, words in Japanese are evidently phonetic or sound representations of the worlds in English rather than words meaning the actual thing in Japanese. So "body back" translates variously as "body pack" or "body bag" for example.

The seller was evidently wrong about it being a solid top.

What threw me was that a blemish or a flaw on a laminate is really odd. I assumed that they would have tossed those pieces of laminate.

Maybe that mark is on the surface and not in the wood grain.

More pics of that 1982 LS80.

Interesting that the model number was handwritten in the pickup cavity.

Wonder how the decision was made to make this an 80? Seems like possibly a custom order to me. Reminds me of Cliff's 1982 ST120 with the handwritten number.

Tokai LS-80 Love Rock Tokai LS-80 Cherry Sunburst Cherry CS 1982 year made

Description

It is Tokai LS series Les Paul Les Paul.

It is a popular Japanese vintage 1982 TOKAI LS-80 LOVE ROCK.

This is a vintage TOKAI from the early 80's that is gaining popularity year by year.

The LS-80 has a plain top in the catalog,
Regarding this individual, it is a solid flame top. I see a lot of tiger eye individuals, including other manufacturers, but this individual is different depending on the viewing angle. A rare flickering flame that changes its expression is attractive.

The neck shape also has a narrow nut width of about 43mm (not thin), and it is probably a shop ota at that time.

The color is cherry sunburst. It is a nice color with a vintage-like texture with a little red fading.

There are some dents. Overall, it is in good condition for being 40 years old.

Tokai studied Gibson Les Paul 1958, Using the abundant wood of that time, we were particular about parts of details that were rare at that time, Les Paul is highly evaluated as a model created with time and effort.

The body is a one-piece mahogany with a machined single maple top. It is a luxurious construction that can only be seen in high-end models today.

The fingerboard uses dark rosewood.

The maple on the top has just the right amount of flex, and the appearance of hard maple is also attractive.

Parts of each part are aluminum tail piece, brass material bridge, escutcheon etc. It is made with a focus on vintage.

An attractive Les Paul from the golden age of Tokai with a deep and beautiful top arch.

Long-established domestic guitar factory, Tokai musical instrument. It has earned a high reputation as a vintage worldwide.

It is the Tokai LS80, which is famous for being a complete copy that is said to surpass the original.
Neck is normal. Easy to play truss rod. I can afford. The string height is about 1.5mm at 12F. The neck, rod, and bridge are in good condition, so you can adjust the string height to your liking. About 78% of frets remain. It is still in a usable state.
Accessories Tokai hard case is included.
