Pearl Les Paul guitar

Post by Pico » Thu Feb 04, 2010 4:03 pm

Is anyone here familiar with the brand Pearl and their LesPaul copies?
I tried finding some infomation over the net but almost nothing. Just few words late 70, Japan...
Im asking couse I would like to get my hand on one of thses babies!
A friend of mine has it, and the guitar was locked in a basemet for 20 years.
I tried it and passed out
Ofcourse, he wont sell it

Man...everyone of those Pearl copies I have seen on line has been gorgeous. Don't know much about who made them though. Just rumors and speculation. Some say Matsumoku but I doubt it.

Pretty cool.... my guess would also be that it's Matsumoku made.

They're not Matsumoku.
I've searched info out over the years for everyone who asks the question in these forums and nobody at the Uncle Mat forums will agree that they're Matsumoku.
They were'nt a Tokai build...maybe Greco or Ibanez built them Terada possibly.

Thats a beauty!

I've got a Pearl LP custom copy that my sister gave me when she found it in the loft of her new house.

She died shortly after, so it's a very special guitar to me.

It had a few minor bits missing, but I had these in my parts box.

I'm amazed at how sweet a guitar it is, though it doesn't look in as nice condition as the one in the pics above, it's got bumps and bruises and finish cracks, but it's a beautiful guitar.

I have been told that it's possible Ibanez or Tokai made, but it's so difficult to find out any info.

Hers some pics of my one, I need to take some better ones.

It's the same logo as the Pearl drum company isn't it? Maybe they know something, probably not but no harm in asking.
We should start a band with obscure but great MIJ instruments! I could play my Camel Journey (Precision) Bass...

I've tried Magnus...and each time I ask they say that they no longer make guitars....end of email
But yes...it IS the same company.
Somebody else definitely built these for them though as their Chiba factory ONLY produced drums and drum related gear.

Are Pearl a US company? It looks that way on their website.
I never really got the hang of this outsourcing thing in Japan, for example:
There are quite a few supposedly Tokai made Fernandes instruments around but the ones (basses) I've seen look nothing like Tokais. Different hardware, pickups, routing, design.... So either they are not made by Tokai or the Japanese workshops possessed chameleon like qualities :o
And if they could shape shift like that the Pearl Guitars could have been made by anyone really.
Love that Oxblood by the way! :D

Guys Im noticing a lot of buzz on this guitar.
When I play almost every string produces a buzz no matter on wich fret I play it.
Is this normal for a LP guitar?!?!

No, not normal at all, it needs adjusting.
A very rough and ready check you can do yourself:
  • Hold down the low E string on the 12th and 3rd frets.
    Pluck it.
If the string can't move at all the neck is too straight or has a back bow.
If the space between around the 6th fret and the string is more that a playing card you have a front bow and the neck needs to be straightened.
If the test turns out OK, try raising the bridge a little bit at a time. Slacken the strings a little first.
If not, take the guitar to a good guitar tech. Don 't try to adjust the truss rod yourself if you don't know what you're doing!
Also check that the nut looks OK, they are often very worn on old "cheap" guitars.

Good Luck! :)
