What's this TCC Gakki? I feel like a drug addict who hears he's been missing out.

Link? :p

And is there a place online where I can find the Greco 1977 catalog? I've used the links below for other guitars, but they don't have Greco in 1977.

Here's another tempting one, by the way. Greco Jeff Beck strat, highest model:

http://page12.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p204510752

Surely Jeff Beck never used a Strat like that or specified what should go into that guitar?

When I was in Japan in March I saw a poster somewhere in a guitar shop in Ochanomizu that he had done a concert in Tokyo (must have been 1977 or 1978) where he had played that guitar (those mods) and it seems to have caught on. I think I remember even Schecter (may have been another brand) having some new ones with the same electronics on Digimart. I'm not sure about the specifics, but I think basically every pickup has an on/off switch. There was also a SE-500JB / 600 /700. 800 is the highest. In the other link I posted up here, if you go to the Greco catalog of that time you can see them.

If a weak-willed person with more money than sense were to ask you which one to buy, what would you say?

I know nothing about Grecos, but I did get a chance, last week, to play a Strat-like-object which had 3 x 3 position switches for each pickup. 5 minutes playing this just confirmed to me what an awful way it is to drive a Strat - a bit like trying to steer your car using a pc games joystick thingy! So I would avoid anything with this method of pickup selection as it would drive me mad inside an hour!

So I would buy the other one, which is still gorgeous, despite the rather strange scratchplate.

I'd like the white/rosewood one better if it was a bit more wrinkly. Looks like it needs a bit of nice relicing. I'm no expert on grecos but lvery late 70s and early 80s on most makes seem to be the best.

The only 77 catolgues I can find are here there's a pic of the SE1000 but no spec's, all japanese & most of the other 77 links are broken.

I agree with Mike about the non-conventional controls on that one but it'd be a fairly cheap mod to add a nice scratch-plate and new knobs/pots etc.

I have a subscription on Vintaxe.com for a month for my Burny research project. You can find the 1977 Greco catalog there.
There's a SE1200 (N/T/S); white pickguard black pups, probably DiMarzios which cost 18.000.
The SE1000 (N/T/S) has the strange brushed metal pickguard with PU119 pups which cost 10.000.
And the SE800 (N/T/S), white pickguard, white PU100 pups at 8.000 yen.
Can't read japanese so don't know further specs.

Very nice. I can't see any sign of a Floyd Rose though.

Thanks Mike, i thought one might have been installed, maybe it was just some sort of locking head nut coz of the screw holes in the headstock. Im not into floyd rose anymore :D too many dive bomb noises and slack string noises....and no music sound 8)
I'm over shredding noises.....best left to lightening fingers...i'll just play music instead.

Thanks for that info. I think I'll leave those two strats alone (for now) since I bought two other guitars yesterday. For what it's worth I've posted it on another thread not to derail this one here.

Any other Yamaha SG lovers here?

Today another "Jeff Beck" strat sighting, Fender Japan this time:

Hmmm, and as I decided to look further I found this:

JB was a big time modder of guitars, ever seen his Telegib? I'm willing to believe that he used a Strat with that control set up at some point over the years. If the Japanese want to keep issuing it as a special Strat model, well why not, eh?

I've seen other Japanese makes with similar controls, such as Moon, so I'm guessing there's a few players over there who appreciate the different layout.

He has a current Fender Signature Strat that looks pretty normal except for the flatter radius and bigger frets.

It just seems dishonest to have a Signature guitar made that you rarely (or never) play in public. With Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, B.B. King & many others, if you go to see them live it's likely that they will play their Sig. model for most of the set. Same with Beck - he'll play his Fender US Sig. Strat. So what relevance do the other guitars have?

I just don't get it.

Some Japanese makers still produce a Telegib as well, and I got no problem with that because I want the Telegib to be present in this world.

It's probably the same with the JB Strat with the two knobs and toggle switches - some players want that configuration, so they might as well keep making it.
Actually, I don't see how they could call it anything else seeing as JB came up with the original idea?

Does Clapton ever play his Gibson ES-335 Special Edition?
What about the Hendrix Flying V, I'm certain Jimi doesn't play that anymore...
