Look at what I've just found:

How much???? Someone tell me how a potentiometer from 1966 (which is a consumable part and prone to wearing out) will be any flippin' different in terms of sound than a new one for a fiver?

And here it is - in all its vintage glory:

?75 Opening bid?? I'll just throw some tenners down the toilet now, shall I?

People are fools. Maybe we should have a thread for most ludicrously overpriced / most tenuous vintage guitar parts?

This could be it! :D

Obviously you haven't spent much time looking at what vintage parts and pieces are going for. Pull up any vintage year (like say 1965 Fender Stratocaster) and you'll find stuff like this.

Listen, if a vintage guitar sells for $25,000, obviously it is the sum total of the parts. You do the math. What do you think the pots from a $250,000 1959 Les Paul would go for?

That first link you posted Marcus, the seller has the cheek to ask $29 shipping for a pot!!

Well, for insured overseas shipping to the US, doesn't seem too far fetched. Besides, if you're paying $150 for one pot, I don't think the shipping is a deal breaker.

It is nonsense isn't it? I saw an ad recently for a string tree from a 1973 Strat. Even if that was a desirable thing to own (which it isn't!), how the hell is anyone supposed to be able to tell the difference between a 1973 Fender string tree and a 1984 Japanese one? Or any other string tree?

This is the problem when non-playing collectors rule the market rather than musicians who actually want to play the **** things. Sad really.

Mike

The only sense I can make of it is if you buy a 60's strat with some non original parts, you can usually buy vintage, date correct parts to make it a correct, straight 60's strat. And in doing so, you'll probably sell it for alot more.

It's no different than paying a fortune for vintage 1966 Mustang hubcabs rather than aftermarket lookalikes.

Same with vintage watches. You'll pay thru the arse for a 50's Rolex bracelet rather than a NOS version.

I just posted a single coil pickup to the US for $2.50, didn't charge for the used jiffy bag :D

Hubcaps are one thing you can see them, you wouldn't buy 1966 sparkplugs :D

Point taken but I go back to what I said....a vintage strat with non vintage replacement parts will sell for considerably less....whether you can see the parts (pots, 3 position switch, trem block, stratchplate shield, etc) or not.

A refret noticeably reduces value as well. At this point, I'm talking about an investment piece and not a player guitar - to be sold to another investor who couldn't give a crap how much life those pots have on them.

those pots are bargain ;)

Exactly! You hit the nail squarely on the head there old son!

Some clown would probably try and find a few gallons of 1966 oil to go in it as well.

A string tree from a '73 Strat? Well, a '73 Strat in itself is an unadulterated pile of steaming shyte, so quite why anyone wants to buy bits off one I can't fathom, unless it's to restore an original Strat. Prior to banging a stake through it then burying it at a crossroads at midnight of course.
That way it can't rise from its well-deserved grave and scare small children with its bendy neck joint and bridge saddles fashioned from finest chrome plated Parmesan.

As for those others parts prices - Two words of exclamation spring to mind, and one of them is "Mutha"

Still, someone must buy them or they wouldn't list them. Looks like I've hit a nerve with this one. Let's keep going and find the most silly price we can!
