Gold Star vs AST series

Does anyone know whether or not the Gold Star and the later AST's with the altered headstocks were manufactured in the same factory and are basically the same sans different headstock shape? There is a lefty AST-62 on ebay that was offered to me for about 520, shipping included. Never had a Tokai, still have a 78 Greco and would be willing to grab this one, provided it shares some DNA with the Gold Stars.

The specs for them are at the top of that thread. They are nice guitars. Slab rosewood board. Vintage MKII pickups. Poly finish.
