I have the exact opposite experience/opinion as the 2 posts above. Getting ready to sell my last Tokai.

By way of explanation... This guitar came to me with a flamey maple laminate top, which was bubbling, and could not be saved. So I chiseled/pried/whatevered it off (actually, a luthier friend did most of that work) and exposed the plain maple cap. Mostly. I left some of the horizontal...

I've got some extras, and I have a pickup endorsement deal, so I expect I'll be swapping out more of them. If I decide to sell a pair I'll contact you first.

The SG came from Japan. No serial but it's probably mid-to-late 80's. Could be as late as the 90's, but the VH-1s and electronics look like 80's. It's got the fattest neck of any of my Burnys.

For me, to make a Tokai tonally viable, one needs to swap out most of the electronics, including the pickups. Please don't misinterpret that as a knock - it really isn't. But the pups are pretty bad, compared with even the Gibson USA's, to my ears. I was just commenting on the direction this...

I totally dig my Tokai Love Rock. But let's not compare apples to spaceships here. The Tokai pickups and electronics leave a lot to be desired. The good news is that's pretty easy stuff to swap out. The wood on Jap Tokais is good, and the fit and finish is great. Quality-wise, the Gibson...

+1. Every tech I know does it this way, exceot you usually only need 1 or 2 of them. Some white glue in the hole, snap off the ends, thread in the screw. Voila!

Dude, there's a reason why Korean guitars cost less, and it's not just cheaper labor. For the price of a Korean Epi, you can get a pretty killer MIJ Love Rock. Don't buy a 3-legged dog, then complain because it limps.
