Hatchet Jobs, Rodent Routs, Woodpecker Holes & Other Assorted Butchery

It's not something I'd do, but at least it looks quite well executed.

… Or you could just cut and finish each dowel a little short of the depth of the hole and then tap them flush using a small piece of wood between the dowel and the hammer to prevent bruising. No, no, probably better to run a coarse-bladed saw across the face of the instrument. You can see it...

    Mystery Korean ALS

Well, I'm glad this all happened to me about 1/4 Century ago, because it clearly gets very messy indeed! The guitar I bought had a fixed neck, mahogany neck and back, with a flamed top that may well have been veneer. From memory, the decal on the back of the head was certainly similar to the...

    Mystery Korean ALS

Thank you for this. It all gets complicated, doesn't it? I've been searching around to see if I have any pictures, or copies of the documentation relating to the Korean Tokai LP-type I had. The trouble is, this was about 25 years and three house moves ago. So far, I've got nothing. Fortunately...

Odd (Non CN) No Prefix Serial Numbers, Chinese? 2015, 2016

At this point, I'd like to sound a note of caution. I'm happy to help to expand the pool of knowledge about Tokai instruments with serial numbers or specific features that don't seem to 'fit'. What I don't want this to turn into is some kind of witch hunt against Tokais we simply don't know...

Alas not. They're just cheap Chinese junk, and I tend to ditch them ASAP.

Odd (Non CN) No Prefix Serial Numbers, Chinese? 2015, 2016

The s/no on mine is deep under the lacquer. We normally only see the 'modified' head shape over here in the UK, going back since the late 1980s, but I think mainland Europe sees the original profiles. Picture below isn't great but it shows the fairly crude routing, the colour coding of the two...

Odd (Non CN) No Prefix Serial Numbers, Chinese? 2015, 2016

This bass is currently for sale on eBay, from a UK seller. It's very similar to the one I bought recently. Details they have in common include the colour and the Badass bridge. There's something else they have in common, and this is a strange one. My bass has a coloured paper dot on the top...

Odd (Non CN) No Prefix Serial Numbers, Chinese? 2015, 2016

I've already learned a lot from this forum – and this thread in particular – for which I'm grateful. The conclusion I've come to is that the instruments with serial numbers correct for Tokais have undoubtedly come from factories that have made them for Tokai at some point. Chinese fakers don't...

Odd (Non CN) No Prefix Serial Numbers, Chinese? 2015, 2016

For the purposes of continuing this discussion without misunderstanding, there are a few distinctions I think may be useful. (I'm not suggesting these terms are universally adopted, BTW. I'm just trying to be clear about what we're trying to say.) "Never officially imported into…" conveys to me...

Odd (Non CN) No Prefix Serial Numbers, Chinese? 2015, 2016

A friend used to work in the Far East, sourcing manufacturers for a US air conditioning company. He encountered cases where factories continued to produce – and a former distributor continued to sell – units bearing the US company's brand. When I worked as an audio and broadcast technology...

Odd (Non CN) No Prefix Serial Numbers, Chinese? 2015, 2016

The Jazz Sound I bought just before Christmas seems to fit this mould.

Is this even a real Tokai Jazz Sound?

Well, here's an unexpected treat! The tracking said "3rd Jan" and about a minute later a courier arrived at the door with a big package. You only get timing like that in comedy films. Pictured below, in full festive mode, are the new Tokai alongside my Fender MIM/Squier hybrid. Interestingly, we...

Is this even a real Tokai Jazz Sound?

I'm very impressed by – and grateful for – the level of knowledge you guys have taken the time to share with me. Thank you. I have a few extra pictures, which show what appear to be some questionable after-market changes. If we take the view that this might be genuine, what do you think its...

Is this even a real Tokai Jazz Sound?

Hi guys. I saw this bass and thought: Wow! Great deal. Now, I'm starting to wonder if any genuine Tokai Jazz Sound basses have truss rod adjustment at the nut and a serial number on the back of the head. Sorry if this is a naive question, or it's been asked before.
