It’s so hard to capture the checking on a camera! Zoom in on the photos to really see the checking.
Here’s a pic of the top bout around the pickup selector. There is more checking around the body. Really hard to capture the rest of the checking. I didn’t even realize how much checking there...
My ‘81 LS120 has a fair amount of checking. I’ll try and capture it with my phone camera.
My other guitars don’t have any checking at all. All from 80-81. Greco SS-700, LS80 and ES100J.
Seems pretty rare for these finishes to check. I think I’ve only read of less than a handful of owners...
on my 1980 Greco SS-700. I just picked it up from a re-fret. The tech says the fretboard had a 8” radius. He flattened it slightly to a 9” radius to help facilitate bends on the higher frets.
When he mentioned it, I looked at the neck heel and sure enough, it was much rounder than a typical...
I’ve only owned 2 Greco’s. A 90s Mint Collection with P90s and my current ‘80 SS700. Both have/had a slim taper neck.
I’ve also owned a late 80s Burny SG that also had a slim taper neck.
I think the more recent Tokai SGs have a bigger profile.
Sweet guitar! Sounds like you found one with a nice sized neck. My ‘81 has a narrow nut width and the profile really tapers off towards the nut. It’s still one of my all time greatest guitars.
I’ve owned this ‘81 ES-100J for 5 years. It’s needed new frets since I got it. Was playable, but barely. I imagine the frets were similar to those on the “Fretless Wonder” Black Beauties. Definitely no more fret life for a level.
I waited so long partly due to cost and probably equally because...
They look original. My ‘81 had similar looking pickups with the white hookup wire.
Mine had been tinkered with. Magnets were swapped I believe. I don’t think anyone has ever figured out the origins or manufacturer of the pickups.
Doesn’t seem to be any relationship or pattern to the tops. They all seem to be pretty unique in flame pattern. Mine looks fairly different to those posted above. Veneer or not, those are all pretty beautiful tops! Not too understated, but not the extreme AAAAAAA KILLER FLAME TOP!!!
I am curious as to how much of the construction was done by hand in 1980?
I was swapping pickups in my 1980 Greco SS-700 and the pickup routes appear to have been done by hand. Or at least the router was guided by hand.
I’ve seen the cavities of one other ‘80 SS-700 and they look very similar.
