Re: Greco vs Tokai vs Fernandes necks

My two cents: Grecos vary a lot, generally getting thicker/wider over time. The width is generally over 42 mm and under 43, but the consistently widest ones I've come across so far have been 1980-1982 SE450s and 700s (basically the same guitar with different pickups) which have all been 43,2 - 43,4 ...

Re: Lawsuit?

Great info, thanks again Hamamatsu! I'm wondering about one thing: do we have any indication as to what the Fender-Tokai lawsuit was specifically about? The 1977 Norlin vs Elger lawsuit concerned the open-book headstock shape, Fender tried (and failed) to sue several manufacturers for copying the St...

Re: Lawsuit?

Thanks for posting those. For some reason I can’t see the images. All I see is the word “image”.
Huh. Odd, they show up just fine here. Anyone else have the same issue?

Re: Lawsuit?

Are you saying that in 1984 Fender sued Tokai, and Tokai lost? If so, do you know of any documentation of this lawsuit? My interpretation of it would be the other way around: Fender sued Tokai and lost (if so, not the first time), BUT Tokai was slapped with a court order preventing them from operat...

Re: Lawsuit?

Ok, so here's an interesting bit of info regarding Tokai and the "lawsuit" thing. The company history timeline on the Japanese-language Wikipedia page for Tokai Gakki contains the following entry, as translated by Google: "In 1984, Fender filed a lawsuit for manufacturing its own counterfeit product...

Re: Silver Star Gallery

And a third '83, a SS/TSS40MRR. H-stamps, one replaced tone pot, missing back plate, otherwise original. I seem to have missed taking pics of the neck code on this one. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0Vq4lcuEBrV9eBd212f9SBcfsJuUJEeHpTrFrBsH967Y3qI6oX_2_twwi1XpCjmBqLTalDj8bbuY9ZAUCaEdhgU7Bh_B2zudA...

Re: Silver Star Gallery

Another 1983 SS/TSS, 40 or possibly 38 in OW finish. The white pickguard is non-original, so it might have come with a black one. Also missing back plate and trem arm, but the electronics (incl H-stamp pickups) appear to be original an untouched. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Bsozk-rAWRoXMCDGsSS...

Re: Silver Star Gallery

1983 SS40MR (or TSS, since there's no '83 catalog we don't really know what designation they used that year). H-stamp pickups, well-worn but a great player if you like slightly smaller necks. Replaced knobs, tone pots and cap, missing back plate. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rOV3YbcVPL5uG4_eHTW...

Voidoid, I referenced you in another thread I started on Silver Stars. Would be great to get your insights.

Sure, a few SS and TSS models have passed through here, I'll see what photos I have. Thanks!

Re: SS 1981 Pickups original?

Pics would settle it, but generally: Low-end and mid-tier model SS pickups are alnicos with grey fibre bobbins, either stamped H or S or with no stamp at all. S-stamps have staggered poles, the others flat. The leads are usually blue and black. The high-end SS80 has a set of DiMarzio FS-1/DP-110 Fat...

Re: NGD Dec 1981 Greco Super Sound SE 600 with alder body

Here’s my April 1982 Super Sound. Has the SE 600 sticker on the back of the headstock. Alder body just like my Dec 1981 . Definitely Fujugen having some fun with leftover parts. Brass nut and bridge pieces.SE1 coil tap pickups, push/pull volume and tone pots. One to switch the tap and the other to ...

Re: NGD Dec 1981 Greco Super Sound SE 600 with alder body

If you're wondering what model the April '82 is, it has to be a 600. 800s were Super Real, 500s and 450s Spacey Sound and 380's Super Power at that time. Mind you, Greco Fender copies from the last few months before Fender JVs took over Fujigen's production lines can be seriously odd with previously...

Re: Slotted Truss Rod Nut

MIJ guitars are all-metric by default (with a few rare exceptions). Truss rods have mostly either m5 or m6 thread, usually the latter. Try measuring the inside diameter of the original nut with calipers, the measurement will be slightly under the required thread (like 5,6 mm = m6).

Re: Wide range humbucker replacement in 70’s Spacey sound

Whether or not a standard-sized WRHB will fit or not depends on the the guitar's year of manufacture. The Greco TE400/450/500 models (the deesignation changed over the years) began with Gibson-size hb's with one height-adjustment screw on each side at launch in 1973, got four screws the year after a...
