Re: Odd and unusual Greco SE's

I have a April 1982 oddball. SE1 pickups and push pull pots the same as the all black strat towards the top of this thread.Brass nut and saddles. Also has an alder body. Nice one, thanks for posting! Yeah, seems identical. Beautiful guitar, looks near mint? Its serial is 27 higher than mine, so we'...

Re: Greco SB-850 "Suzi Quatro" bass

You're welcome, happy to contribute. The Japanese auction and sales sites I follow turn up dozens of vintage Grecos every day, and you see one of these maybe once every 12-18 months or so. So obviously not a big seller. No wonder really, the 85 000 JPY asking price was a lot in the early 70's and it...

Re: Greco SE500 Super Sounds 1977-1978 nut width specs

I currently have two '78 SE500s, one is 42.1 mm, the other just a shade under 43 mm. None of them are standard models, though, one's a 500PR Peter Frampton sig, the other a "Laox Original" store order guitar, but I've no idea if that makes a difference, to be honest. I've maybe 3-4 other late 70s SE...

Atlansia, famous manufacturer of... guitar stands..?

Here's a little curiosity: I've been picking up these Greco-branded wooden guitar stands at online auctions in Japan during the past 18 or so months. The logo is fun of course, but they also look a bit more like furniture than the standard black steel-tube stands. And being on wheels, they're easier...

Re: How to grade the Tokai ST pre 1982

ST40 Trapezoid tuners (same as fender silver series MIJ 1990 to 1996/7) No soldering plate. U pickups. Alder body. Period pickguard. Period string tree. Period models. All gloss finish But isn't the -40 a much later model? First catalog appearance is in 1987, as the TST-40, with budget tuners and c...

Re: TST-56 Specs

I've never had a pointy-nose TST/AST, they've hardly ever seen in Europe and not very often in Japan either. Afaik, they're the only models that have that beautiful little bird decal on the nose, and I've always found it mildly fascinating. I mean, what is that? A stylized mynah bird? A feathered se...

Re: Lawsuit?

I guess the opinion that Fender hated Tokai is the author's Antonio Calvosa's? To me, it seems likely that they actually did. Just Dan Smith calling them "arrogant" indicates it, I guess, it's not really something you'd say about any competitor. And they certainly went after them with a vengeance. ...

Re: Lawsuit?

I'm not that sure that more documented legal processes will come to light, actually. There was a lot of "soft power" involved as well, especially in the form of local distributors of US guitars putting pressure on the dealers: "sell those knockoffs and you can forget about our stuff" and so on. I ta...

Re: Lawsuit?

Stellar research, Sigmania, and the whole block logo mystery solved in one fell swoop. Many thanks. And as stated in one of the post, it was a war fought by proxies. It's the same with the 1977 Ibanez lawsuit, that was between Gibson's owners Norlin and US Ibanez distributor Elger. Fender and Gibson...

And a guitar museum in Sweden. How awesome! Guitars The Museum is an amazing place, one of the finest vintage guitar guitar collections on public display anywhere in the world. The story behind it is equally amazing, a pair of twin brothers, two perfectly regular guys, who basically on an impulse b...

Re: Gold Metallic Springy Gallery

Block logo gold metallic. I've seen 50-stickered block logos with what would nominally be a 5k-extra custom colour before (there is one in the block logo gallery thread, for instance), and they seem to be generally more common in custom finishes than earlier and later STs/TSTs. Could indicate that ...

Re: Gear Recommendation Between SS and ST + Identification

That SS85 seems like a deal? At 71 500 JPY (523 USD), it's an even better deal if you buy it straight from the Japanese shop, The guitar is in Tsukuba, the eBay seller in Osaka, so the latter is obviously a reseller. Mind you, 819 USD doesn't seem like a crazy price to me either. It's been listed f...

Re: Gear Recommendation Between SS and ST + Identification

Sigmania covered a lot of ground here, but I thought I'd add a cent or two as well. First: having owned 10+ of each through the years, I'd say the main difference between ST/TST and SS/TSS models from the player perspective is the neck. SS/TSS usually have narrower necks in my experience, often arou...
