You want to use something with dedicated low latency drivers like asio drivers. Plenty to choose from.....

Simplest way is to copy and paste contents to a folder on the computer. You could also open a Dropbox account and back everything up there or just us that as the share folder and use the external drive to backup Dropbox

I remember seeing these sold in Australia in the early 90's. Picked a few up and they sounded great. Don't have any more information on them but I do remember some really nice sunburst strats and teles in the 60's style with rosewood slab fingerboards.
