Epiphone Les Paul LQ Limited Edition

Post by Pegcityrocker » Fri Sep 09, 2011 12:58 pm

Thought I'd post this here in the orville section as it sort of fits the description. I didn't find much info on the forum about Epiphones so i thought I'd add what I can on these great Fujigen guitars.

Just picked up this great Epiphone Les Paul LQ and I am thoroughly impressed! The first thing I will say is that it has about the biggest neck I have ever played on a Japanese Les Paul. It's right up there with old Greco EGF necks. I've had a few 850's and 1000's and this neck is every bit as large if not even larger. that makes me very happy!

Great laquer finish in a dark tea burst. The mahogany is stained very red, much like the original bursts. I love the plaintops and this one has some pretty strong grain pattern. It's all original and it sounds very good. I was thinking of swapping the pups out but I don't think I have to - it's got a great clean and crisp tone even when cranked with lots of overdrive. I've got a set of custom wounds I might try in her just for fun though.
Not sure how much difference there is between this and the Elitist version. I think the Elitist had better electronics and pickups and it came with a hard case. Nonetheless, this a great guitar.

Here's a few pics of her.

Congrats on a nice guitar Pegcity rocker!

I think I have seen one that I think is as nice - this one, which may as well be a twin to yours. Few people know about these and if you can get one for a good deal you are lucky because they hold their value pretty well here in Japan as the last of the open book Epis. I changed out the pickups to Seth Lovers but the originals were ok.

I also have a LQ SG, LP Special and Custom and they are all great guitars with excellent materials.

With the neck size and lacquer finish I prefer this to my Epi Elite. As well, the Elites I have came with regular pots and plastic wiring like the Lacquer model. Maybe they use switchcraft jacks and toggle switches but that is not much of an upgrade.

That's amazing wulfman, they do look very similar. Even the grain pattern seems to be the same. That's interesting about the Elites having the same type of wiring. Did they come with Gibson pickups?

I also find it interesting that the LQ series have fatter necks than the Elitist series. I would pay a premium for that feature. They seem to be going for the 58 style with the big necks and plain tops.

The Eilte/Elitist have Grover pegs across all models as far as I have seen and they have Epiphone USA pickups which are likely made by Gibson but are quite a bit hotter in the bridge than a vintage wind. I have 2 Elites and they both have a fairly slim neck and came with speed knobs. My impression is that the top carve is a bit different but I may be imagining that.

The LQ customs also have Grovers, so aside from the pickups I don't see much there to make an Elite a more attractive buy unless you like the 60's slim neck.

I do like my Elite plaintop a lot for the looks, but just don't play it much due to the thinner neck.
