The Echoplex EP3 (tape delay) preamp that so many rock recordings were done with, has a FET preamp.
Big deal, what's so special about that?
Well it just so happens to give a 3Dish sort of tone.
There is the EP-PRE http://www.clinchfx.com/ep-pre clips http://www.clinchfx.com/sound-clips and the Xotic EP Booster http://www.xotic.us/effects/ep_booster/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzJuDbzTGZI or someone can build their own FET preamp http://www.till.com/articles/GuitarPreamp/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDeJXaxguqU
A FET preamp used together with a modern analog or digital delay ends up being a good match to try and emulate the Echoplex EP3.
The FET preamp can also just be used to give a more 3Dish tone in general.
