I have looked at a couple of eb3 style basses, these are current models and I believe they are Korean and sadly the finish was really bad, is there or has there ever been a Japaneese version of this guitar?

Hi. im a newbie by the way from sunny Aberdeen Scotland.

I got an Orville EB-3 bass that was made in Japan and they are sweet!! It's basically a Gibson EB-3 made by the Japanese (who are better than the USA at making guitars as far as I'm concerned). Nothing against American made - it's great - but Japan does it better. If they didn't, there wouldn't have been lawsuits galore in the 70's & 80's.

Greco and Burny have made fine EB3s, stick with the mid 80's and you'll be alright.
What you AFAIK never get is the varitone switch, the Japanese replicas all use standard rhythm/treble switches. Shame! But there you go.

Epiphone elite eb3 does have the varitone setup and overall it's way better than my original gibson eb3 I had way back
