Hi guys, i would still prefer an greco or an OBG over the burny and i still think that the price on the burny is a little rich. Don't be in too much of a hurry and you will pick up a really good guitar for eg: a japanese friend of mine recently sold {and he had it for ages} a wine red OBG reissue for 95000 yen or about$890.00US great guitar and very good value. There are still some bargains to be had so be a little patient and i'm sure you'll find something you'll like.

Cheers Mick

Try an Orville by Gibson Reissue, everything you want but normally a 2-piece back. Excellent guitars.

I thought the guy was looking for something with end bound frets.
I have seen plenty of OBG Lesters that do not have end bound frets, just like their less costly Orvilles cousins

I have also seen some higher spec Orvilles as compared to some OBG Lesters, i.e. 2 piece bodies on some Orvilles as compared to 3 piece on some OBG.
This doesn't mean that it's a better guitar, just because it has less pieces that comprise the body but many people (here) believe that.

I think funky needs to understand that when dealing with these MIJ guitars, everything is not as black & white, or cut & dry as it may seem to be..............

Hi MIJ, as far as i know all OBG reissues have fret edge binding.

Mick

Mick, thanks for pointing that out to me

Apologies to JohnA, as I completely overlooked the word 'Reissue' in his post.

I am now officially a moron

This also brings up another can of worms for our new forum member funkystylez, as we have Orville, Orville by Gibson, and of course we have the much rarer Orville by Gibson Reissues

Yo funky, you sure you're really up for all of this?

Alright folks,

How would you rate this guitar from villager when you look at the traits i was looking for in my les paul? A side to side comparison perhaps to the 3 guitars John mentioned would be nice..i know one of them he mentioned was an orville but all guitars are different so..
anyways this guitar seems to be based on a les paul custom from 57 but there are also ones based on the year 59 for pretty much the same price which only adds to the confusion.

Orville by gibson: 57 LPC REISSUE
Resized%20DSCF2788.jpg

Wine Red <- i love this color

Ebony Board/Mahog Top <-any comments on wood types used/pieces/playability etc

1995 <- good year for orville?

Fret Binding <- nice

Nitro <- makes this a high end guitar?

Gibson 57 PU <- so basically this makes it sound 100%(??) like a gibson lp 1957, but was that a good year?

Also it's a custom.. and customs > standard correct?

?800/?1125/$1500 EXC sounds reasonable

Not listed are: Weight, solidness, neck info, tuners.. what else?

p.s. just in case: Villager i'm sorry if i'm posting guitar pictures from your shop without permission but your site has been very educational to me and on ebay the information tends to be too scattered with sellers not knowing everything about what they're selling from my experience at least.

"There are some Greco with no serial # from late 80's or early 90's and they come with larger frets from the factory than other Les Pauls and also have very dark fretboard.
I personally like them over most other Les Pauls.
They are cheaper too."

Interesting comments from mustang_axeslinger.

The no serial Grecos from the late 1980s he seems to be talking about were made by Cort in Korea but used the same sort of wood as the Japanese Grecos (African Mahogany) so I would expect them to sound as good/bad as any other Greco.
I think they had Cort Powersound pickups as well but I could be wrong.

There are some no serial Grecos from the early 1990s which are made in Japan and are different to the no serial Cort Grecos from the late 1980s.
Sometimes they get confused with the no serial Cort Grecos from the late 1980s.

No worries, it's me that normally gets it wrong!

One thing Funky, you seem to have started out looking at LP standards and are now looking at Customs, they are quite different guitars.

I was told Standard and Custom were the same, with the custom using higher end hardware.. a "pimped" version so to speak. Maybe my source wasn't very reliable, so tell me if above is correct and perhaps about the other differences if any?

kind regards,
Adam

so much info needed...ok the standards and customs have different tone due to the ebony board and mahogony top of the customs..they are darker and fuller than standards....generally....

that particular WR custom is an Orville By Gibson ...its very very unusual in that there is no ser no on the back of the headstock...which is why i think it is one of the last OBG's ever made...and therefore 1995. its around 9.5 lbs by the way, with a fat neck.....

m8 ...i think you would be happy with most MIJ of that quality and that price bracket...they will all be top quality guitars...BUT...in an ideal situation, you should get out and play a few customs and standards head to head and decide which feel look and sound you prefer...

I will definately try these guitars out, but i know of only 1 shop around 30 min from where i live that has these types of guitars.. and that shop could be compared to a fast food joint when it comes to service.. it's a very commercial shop that probably wouldn't appreciate me coming back every 3 days to try 2 different guitars without ever buying one

Alright, an easier question hopefully:

What are the differences between les paul 57' and les paul 59' ?
Some people say 57' is the holy grail, and some say it's 59'..

................and to get end bound frets in the Orville range, one will have to completely disregard the Orvilles, & the Oville by Gibsons, & go directly to the Orville by Gibson Reissues

those lowly Burnys are looking better every year     ...............

This one is back, even higher price, with the same specs mentioned... Seems like the seller doesn't want to listen to what the specialists here said...

Just couldn't help myself, last time i sent him an email he said he'd burnt the f...ing thing in his oven...hahaha, so this time i sent him an even more detailed explanation as to why it is not an 58-100.....the reply should be interesting..... :p Actually the 1982-1983 catalogue lists the 58-100 as only being made in ebony colour with ebony board and groove pickups, so it is definitely not what he says it is...
