Hi,

I've been checking out your site for sometime and finally took the plunge and bought a Tokai, but I'm a bit puzzled concerning its origins.
The serial number would suggest an 1981 LR, and it has a 2 screw truss rod cover consistent with Japanese Manufacture, BUT, the back plates are white as you will see in the following images.

The guy on Ebay never overtly claimed it to be Japanese, but it did write "Japanese guitar" on the custom's form.

Can anyone tell me what they think this is?
Thanks,
Wolfgang

I'd say it's an '81 Japanese Love Rock, although I don't know which model number. Got to be an LS120 or above though as it has a flame top. Someone more knowledgeable will help I'm sure. :)

If you take the neck pickup out, there may be some information in the neck cavity?

So the white back plates don't automatically make it korean?

I read somewhere on this forum that the white back plates are a red flag...

I hope not javascript:emoticon(':-?'), cause the rest of it seems to check out pretty well.

I took the pickups out, but there was only some illegible magic marker symbol---neither Japanese nor Korean by the look of it.

The pickups and pots are unlabled----

Here are some images of the pickup cavities:

Wolfgang, welcome to the forum.
This guitar is lousy Tokai fake again.
Hopefully you'll get your money back.
Was it an Ebay deal?

Here's the link

Unfortunately, I already left postiive feedback for the guy.

It looks like the buyer protection program is only up to $200---unless I'm reading paypal's thing wrong----MIST---well I'll figure something out---

The fact that this guitar is a fake isn't great news, but considering some of the other things that have happened to me lately, I'll just be thankful that it's only money--nobody died or got hurt....

Vielen Dank f?r Ihren Rat; ich f?hle mich ein bi?chen doof, da? ich diese Gitarre so impulsiv gekauft habe, aber irgendwie m?? das Leben weiter gehen.

Wolfgang

That actually looks similar to one of those fake Gibsons from China with the heavy imprinted serial numbers and mis-aligned vol/tone knobs.

You could always try a polite email to the seller explaining the situation. He MIGHT be genuine and offer you a refund. Got to be worth a try!

You must ask beore buying wolfgang.
Gottfried is right regarding serial number engraved, not japanese Tokai for sure.
Regarding korean I?ve never seen that serial number in a korean Tokai too.
The seller claims to be ...custom Tokai!!!! ,another special, rare, great Tokai!
All in this guitar seems very lousy...get a refund!
