Actually, let me amend that: I forgot I included Billy Duffy. I'd rate his tone on that album over the songs or the playing. The others got it going in both ways.

My fav tonedaddies are:

Kenny Burrell
Wes Montgomery
Phil Keaggy
Gatemouth Brown
Magic Sam
JJ Cale
Mark Knopfler

Most of them play clean or just on the edge of breakup

and then there's:

Hendrix!
Hendrix!
Hendrix!

the eternal godlike grandmaster of tone (imho)

At the risk of being unpopular....

forget the widdlers - who needs all those banks of pedals, when all you need is talent!!!

Greatest living guitarist:

Johnny Marr

Greatest dead guitarist:

Django Reinhart

chew on that!!

Yup...yer waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay unpopular...Django...fair enough but Johnny Marr????? ...someone who knows the names of the chords that they play might have been a better choice :p

Johnny Marr rules. I wouldn't especially rate his "tone" per se, but his playing is stellar. He drives the songs, not his ego and that's what it should be about.
