I've only seen one or two other examples of these semi-hollows elsewhere with "Love Rock" (instead of a flowerpot) on the headstock. I read somewhere that Tokai built a small number of them. I believe it may have been for Hisashi? I've not seen another example with FEB however. The label on this one indicates it's an '08 "ES-Custom" but I'm not sure about it's exact specs, other than what's obvious: flame top/back, laquer finish, fret-edge binding, ABR-1, etc.

So, has anyone here seen (or heard of) a similar spec'd beast? Perhaps some of our uber-knowledgable members in all-things-Tokai can shed some light on this example...

fingerboard looks like Madagascar, or possibly higher grade lumber

I wondered about that myself as it looks more figured than the usual offerings. I'm wondering now if the guitar is perhaps a one-off custom order then, as I've not encountered all of those of high-end features on a single instrument...

Sent a query off to tokai gakki to see what, if any, additional information they could provide. Not much came back, other than confirmation of what was already known or suspected:

Dear Customer,

Thanks for your inquiry to Tokai Gakki. This is some kind of special order, but we do not know the detail since it has passed around 10 years. As long as we check the features, it is authentic Tokai made in Japan around 2008. We simply do not keep the record more than 10 years ago. Sorry that I cannot help you enough.

Best regards.

Tokai Gakki.

The details of "how it came to be" shall remain a mystery then. I do believe it was probably ordered via this website however: https://theguitarshop2.jp/custom/
