Bought this 1984 Tokai Goldstar from my local guitar shop here in Canada. Was in the neighborhood for a really good strat but wasn't interested in any that were sub $1000/cad. Anything more than that was not affordable to me and then I spotted the Tokai. It's in really good shape for being a 34 year old guitar with a few nicks and dents in it but no chips deep enough to expose the wood. Sorry all my pictures are upside down, but if you look closely you'll see it's genuine. All parts are stock except the saddles which have been replaced with Fender saddles and the rear pick up which is some sort of Dimarzio. I determined it was an ST50 by the fact that it has a 5 digit serial number with no letters. I am extremely happy with this guitar! Love the colour too.

Cool coincidence, I also purchased this week a 1984 Candy Apple Red Goldstar from a pawnshop, but with a rosewood fingerboard. Got it for what I think is really good price. Obviously the guys didn't know what they had.
I first I thought it would be a ST-50, but I am not so sure now as it has a 6 digits serial number, which would mean a ST-70 ?
Anyway, great guitar, in good condition (except it fell from the couch this morning and a chip of paint on the bottom went away...)

Here are some pics :

February 1987

Code under the pickguard should have a 2 as the first number.

Pots should have 71 on lower left corner.

Six Digit Serial Numbers With 2xxxxx

Hi. Thanks for the info. Were they still making Goldstar models with Fender like headstocks in 1987 ? As regards to the pots, I have changed the electronics but I should have them somehere. I will look under the pickguard next time I change the strings.

Yes. That’s a misconception promoted by the Registry.

You can to this day buy Goldstars with the Fender headstock.

And your guitar is an ‘87. I’ve found others.

Six Digit Serial Numbers With 2xxxxx

If it has/had VII pickups it’s a TST50. V pickups it’s a TST60.

Beautiful guitar.

You're welcome. It has become an obsession to sort out these Goldstars that no one seems to know much about.

Slowly getting there.

But I feel confident yours is from 1987. Pics of the pots and body/neck codes would confirm the precise month.

Beautiful guitar. Congrats!

Let us know about the pots, the pickups, and the neck/body codes. That would nail it down to model, and month made.
