Interesting, my 1981 ST80R, neck (dated February), does not have a fretboard stamp.

This one is not right. The rosewood board and skunk stripe stopped in late 79 early 1980 and also the larger neckbolt pattern didnt start till late 80/81 meaning new holes would have been drilled in the neck for it to fit that neckplate style...

Read here several times that the change from narrow to larger neckplate happend around mid/towards end 1978?

There is 3 different plates, the smallest plate which you are speaking of, then the larger plate with a narrower screw spacing. Then there was the last which went through to the goldstars which had the widest correct screw spacing.

Plus another reason this cant be a 1981 is that Tokai changed to a phillips head truss rod screw in early 1980. This has a allen key adjuster.

Okay, I did not know that, thanks for the info.

May I give yet another remark :D  ; my (februari stamped) 1981 neck has an allen/hex key adjuster?

Hmmmm. Would like to hear some other opinions. I bought it from a reputable dealer who is known here. I thought there were only two neckplates for the "Springy sound" small from 1978, and then the larger ones after '78.

I also thought that the stamps went away when the little sticker was placed on the back of the neck around 1981

I thought all springy sounds has the hex Allen truss rod adjustment.

I looked at all the electronics and they were correct

I thought that this guitar might have had an early year(1980?)nicer neck put on it from the factory due to it being a less common three color sunburst. The neck on it looks like it's a bit flamed.

Huh. I hope it's what the seller claimed it is. He has a great reputation on eBay and I though well known here also. Has the original case and case candy. Would be a lot of effort to fake the neck.

Heres a 1980 ST 60 with all the features i described. So its not possible for that neck to be an 81

the neck on my 81 vsb has a skunk stripe and Philips head adj. also see this thread about the changeover from stamp to sticker http://www.tokaiforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=170910&sid=96c1d9ad5e9c8bd48d0602bfa4365233
I have always found that when a factory changes it's processes, there is a blurred area as stock dwindles and new version parts arrive. google images show many 81's with and without stripes and large/small neck plates. Life isn't black and white.

Pretty sure that after early to mid 1980 only maple fingerboard springys had the skunk stripe

As noted previously, it's not all black and white. Tokai is know for anomalies and during a "crossover" year, even more so. I have two 1980 ST80's - rosewood and maple. Both with skunk stripe.

Also had this 81 ST60 - no date stamp on last fret, shadow of a sticker, and rosewood fretboard with skunk stripe
