St50 goldstar daphne blue

Post by Jonwe » Wed Aug 23, 2017 3:18 pm

I'm looking at this st50 on eBay in daphne blue allegedly 1984. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192283378339

The seller kindly shared photos of the neck, cavity and pickups here : http://imgur.com/a/aso2Q

questions for the forum:

1: is it an st-50?
2: is the lack of serial number normal?
3: is that a Tokai body and neck?
4: is the price realistic?

Thanks for your help on this - GAS for a Tokai strat is bad right now.

No serial number on the neck plate?

I have an 84 LS50 and 84 TST80 both with that made in Japan sticker, the LS50 has it across the top of the headstock above the 50 sticker, the TST80 has it in the same place as that Daphne Strat, below the 80 sticker at the bottom of the heel - so the MIJ sticker as I'm sure others will tell us, is legit.

That whole guitar looks legit to me except for the neck plate which would for sure have the serial number and I think has been changed - so there may be a reason that's the only part of the guitar that's been changed - everything else looks right to me for an original Tokai...

some Tokais from around the 80's had no serial number on the neck plate, see example http://www.tokaiforum.com/viewtopic.php ... 8&start=15

Looks OK to me. Brass plate and innards are correct. The only anomaly is the neck plate.

Those would be very early Springy's with small neck plates not later Goldstars.

AFAIK there are no '84 TST's without serial number on the plate so reasonably certain it's been changed for whatever reason...

Hi guys,

This is a pretty nice guitar but some of the details are incorrect . .
The model is a TST-55 SO (Sonic Blue) not Daphne Blue. The wiring, pickups and scratchplate are all 100% ; the neck and body stamps match [ 6=7 ] and the 'Z' shows it was an export model.
The neckplate should/would have had a 5 digit number starting 21xxx - similar to the 1958 Strat this guitar was replicating.
One 'amusing' thing is that in 1958, Fender did not use custom colours - you had a choice of Black, 2T-Sunburst or Blonde. . . but never mind.

Congrats
