I have one but it's old as dirt. I've used it for years and it still works flawlessly.

Dual core WinXP system 3 gigs of ram
Sonar Producer 7
M Audio Delta 1010lt soundcard 10 in/10 out

But it's a fantastic full on recording studio with tons of effects and virtual instruments compared to my cassette 4 track!
If you have an unused PC around you could build one for practically no money.

My current drummer friend has Studio One Pro and a RM32AI on a modern Windows system and he's always fiddling with something to keep it working. He records 32 tracks with his drum kit fully mic'ed when we rehearse. He dumps the whole session, usually a 25-30 gig file to my flash drive, and I can easily open and mix it on my old Sonar rig.

I've never felt the need to upgrade but the new systems and options they have today must be mind boggling.

That's a really open question.

What is your goal?
Which instruments do you want to record?
Do you have a dedicated room for recording and/or mixing?

Thanks for the replies

I live in an apartment so space (and volume) is limited

Guitars, bass and keys. No drums. Drum machine but no live drums.

Do I need to get a mixer?
