Dear MTWA Folk,

Alejandro Escovedo: I saw this guy and his band at the No Depression Festival just outside Seattle last August - verdict: blown away!!

Wanted to give you all a heads up on this acoustic Blues gig that I am booked for at The Jazz Cafe (Camden) and possibly Buckingham and/or Winchester. This guy is really an exceptional Blues/Rocker artiste I feel, (for those who know him, think Willie Nile/Tom Petty/Stones in Country Rock mode - Alejandro Escovedo is a mate of Mr. Nile's and his style is not a million miles away but if anything rootsier).

Hope to see some of you there!

Best regards,
Darren Wisdom

Saw the classic Americana, songwriter from Texas, Alejandro Escovedo last night at The Jazz Cafe, Camden, London. Show was an acoustic duo with Alejandro accompainied by longtime guitarist David Pulkingham. Verdict: quite superb, really heartfelt songs and performances in a high quality, inimate club venue. Dazzling guitar accompaniments throughout from David on both steel and nylon string guitars with quite exceptional use of dynamics. Alejandro's devastating acoustic strumming and powerful holler was well to the fore. Songs were punctuated by interesting and enganging spoken word introductions from Alejandro in a way that greatly added to the initimate sense of occasion. Venue was packed and the audience obviously reverential and well versed in the artiste's canon - one could have heard the proverbial pin drop during some of quiet sections. Alejandro led everyone present in some emotional singalongs. I strongly urge anyone reading this to book up for one of his gigs - he is without doubt one of the best Americana songwriters and performers treading the boards currently and we are lucky to have him play for us here in the UK!!! Alejandro is certainly head and shouders above 99% of what passes for Blues/Rock and Roots music these days. Check his web site for UK Tour dates:

An honourable mention for the support band, The Y Birds. Four hirsuite and talented young lads with really great vocal harmonies in a CSN&Y style (even though none of could have possibly been born back when that style of acoustic rock was popular). This is a young band to watch out for.
