I'm looking for a Tokai strat to throw some SC sized humbuckers in.

Not too fussed about colour, type, model, whether it's MIJ or MIK.

No vintage stuff I can't afford it:(

Cheers

LuBee

If you don't mind the bigger 70s headstock, a Silver Star might be your best bet. They tend to sell for a bit less than Goldstars, yet they're still 80s MIJ. The SS pickups seem to be a bit thinner sounding than the Goldstars, which doesn't matter if you're going to be changing them.

I like the big headstock, what sort of money would I be looking at?

Depends where you are - it's helpful to put your location as part of your profile details. In the UK, I have seen them sell on eBay for anything from just over ?200 to around ?350, but you should be able to get a decent one for around ?250 + postage. That's for an early 80s Silver Star.

Mine is on this thread:

Personally, I prefer Goldstars, which are 54, 58 or 64 copies with the smaller headstock, & a 4 bolt neck joint - the SSs have 3 bolt joints, like 70s Fenders. 84/85 Goldstars tend to sell for a little more than Silver Stars, but prices vary on eBay - you just have to keep your eyes open.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Stratman323

That's much more reasonable than I anticipated.

?250 is actually my budget for the project.

Fancy selling me yours:)

I'm not really looking to sell it right now - I've only had it a few weeks! Do a search on Tokai on eBay, and save it. Then wait. A SS you like will come along sooner or later - they're not exactly rare. You sometimes also get other models like Super Editions, Custom Editions etc, and these tend to be cheaper.

Be patient! 8)

Don't know it it's especially a Tokai you're looking for, the early '80's Fenandes Revival strats are equal in quality and you can pick them up for quite reasonable prices.

Alternatively the newer Tokai strats with the 'wrong' shaped headstock often pop up on ebay for less that ?200

How about this one? Assuming you're happy with a maple neck...

That guy seems to sell a lot of SSs, and most cost more than that one.

Cheers Stratman323

I'll give it a check over, maybe time to stretch that budget!

Nick sold me three guitars, he sells mostly lower models at reasonable prices. He's really great guy, very honest and reliable.

Does he import them from Japan himself? He seems to have a steady stream of SSs.

Thanks, I wondered about that.

LuBee - which humbuckers are you going to use?

Gonna use Seymour Duncan - a couple of Lil'59 for the neck and bridge and Vintage Rails in the middle.

This is if I get a strat with a white pickguard, if I snag one of those nice sunburst silver stars or something with a black pickguard it will all change.

Probably go with JB Junior, Duckbucker, Lil '59 - really depends on what my chums on the SD forum having up for sale S/H
