Hi there, I'm new to collecting Burny's ...got the bug and bought a nice RLG 50 85 recently ....so superior in tone and build to LP standards and better than a lot of Gibson Custom such as VOS's .

I now want a Burny 80's LP Custom in Black with gold hardware, came across this on Ebay but can't figure if this is real or not. Truss rod cover looks a different shape...anyone got any ideas on this. Listed as 80's but it looks completely new...I'm sceptical

Any advice? Here's the listing:

Thanks

Alastair

That one is late '80's, early '90's, some good info on dating Burny's here:

http://www.japanguitars.co.uk/burny%20info.html

The later ones and held in as high esteem as the earlier ones, but I picked one up recently that was as good as any of the earlier ones, really fantastic guitar!

It's ot cheap, but I doubt you would find a nicer example anywhere!

The earlier you go ('85 and back) the better your chance of getting L-8000's as your pickups, vs. VH-4's which are still basically the same, or the "later" VH-1's.

No secret here that Burny Customs are my overall fave MIJ LP.

Now there is a choice....I know what one I'd go for...

Alastair, I see you are warming up to your Burny RLG Super Grade solid top :)

Of the cherry sunburst examples I have owned, it was probably overall the best 8) and you gotta love the fat neck on that one :D

AFA the RLC models, I would personally go for an all mahogany example; under 9 lbs max  like the one on the left :D ................

Guys, thanks for the help , thing is ( Guitar is for my son ) and I need the gold hardware, I saw the earlier mid eighties Burny LP Custom but feel like going for the later one . I cannot find any catalogues for 1988 Burny's and wanted to look into the specs.

Would you say that the 1988 (wing tipped truss rod cover) if in immaculate (near mint) condition will still be pretty much on par build quality wise with the mid eighties?

I can accept the later VH1's are not as good as original , more interested in this later model being built to the same standard as the earlier 80's models.

Thanks

Alastair

IMO build quality is more or less equal, as I have owned several from both eras ...........

......... and with the later 80s stuff = no heel cap so, a true one piece neck

Can I expect a 1988 Burny LP Custom to be solid mahogany and not weight relieved ? I want a heavy guitar 9+ Lbs. I'm assuming the 80's construction on these is solid mahogany.

I am not aware of any weight relieved Burny Lesters from the 1980's era so, I would say no on that; all solid construction

all of the correct diamond inlay RLCs that I have seen are all mahogany, i.e. the tops are also maho

some of the later lightning bolt inlay RLCs have maple tops so, you need to be careful when asking a seller for specs AFA as the top wood being maho, or maple

Ah that is not always true! My Burny is not late 80's and it does not have a heel cap. Remember?

Now THATS how to photograph a guitar.

Yes. To bad I've filled my quota for guitar purchases. I want a 2PU version also.

Very, very nice. Telenut, you will be hard pressed to find a better deal than this. Free shipping from Japan... currently low bid. If this closes for ~650 US give or take, then that is a bargain. If I had not just made 2 recent purchases, I would be all over this one.

nice to see a RLC finally getting the respect (price) it deserves :)

my all mahogany RLC stands toe to toe with any of my other Lesters, of any make or price, even my LS-320 .....................
