8) hello guys i finally got the answer today OFFICIALLY from ESP!
and guess what? YES we are right that EDWARDS gtrs are MOSTLY
MADE IN CHINA only the parts assembly is done in JAPAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

here's the translation of the official email from ESP tokyo headoffice
today.........

" EDWARDS guitars are made in our ESP CHINA factory fully
(from wood working to painting) not by other OEM factories there.
and ONLY the final parts assembly and set-up are done at
our new tokyo factory. "

so after all, when all, the body&neck and plus the finish are
totally beautifully done at ther chinese factory and only
the final parts assembly and set-up are done in japan,
if we call them which country they are made in?
i guess to be fair we must say they are "MADE IN CHINA".
since more than 60% is now obviously made in china.....
i knew this sure since everytime i called ESP they never
say it clearly. always unclear and sometimes even lying.
dirty and silly ESP. i thought so! sorry sneaky. go home!

so ............edwards gtrs are mostly "MADE IN CHINA"
NOT MADE IN JAPAN..............

they are great value gtrs however so this shouldnt be any
problem unless you hate chinese products somehow.
better to be non-prejudice always to be happy in this
global years world. here's the original email from ESP today.
if you wanna read it then you can try in anyways.........
hey mick yo. we are right on all the way from the beginning!!!!!!

didnt you get it??? anyways.........

Interesting Post Joe.

It's not really surprising.

All Yamaha Saxophones used to be made in Japan but now the mid and lower priced Yamaha Saxophones are made in Indonesia and China but in Yamaha owned factories with Yamaha quality control.
There are hardly any differences between the previously Japanese made Yamahas and the newer Indonesian and Chinese made Yamahas.

Edwards and ESP's situation would be similar to the Yamaha situation.

There are probably Japanese ESP trained staff at the factory in China overseeing quality control.

If the major companies own the factories and do their own quality control then it really doesn't matter where they are made.

If the major companies subcontract out to factories they don't own then they have less control over quality control.

I think it's just too expensive to make mid/lower priced items in Japan nowadays.

Were some of the early Edwards made in Japan and when did they switch to China, probably when the ESP China factory opened?

Makes sense. What is the situation with Tokai China? I believe that Tokai don't own a Chinese factory, they just sub-contract the production work - do Tokai have QC staff based in China? If not, that might explain the negative comments about some of the most recent batch.

Seems like ESP opened their Chinese factory in 1992.

The translator had a few chicken problems

1992 March: Establishing ESP-CHAINA on the Chinese Kokuriyuu river economical chicken west.

As far as I know, Fernandes and Tokai sub contract their Chinese made guitars.

:) i just checked the esp link japanstrat left here and yes its true that
in 1992 ESP established their factory in china and called it ESP-CHINA.
so seems like they are making all the non-japan models there since.
checked where is their factory in china and its actually located in
a pretty extreme but cool place very near russia. the most northern
state of china and on the extreme edge right next to russia.
here's the info from wiki. geez our gtrs coming from so far away!!!!

No matter where my Edwards was made, I still love it. Wish Edwards just would have come out and announced it - maybe that explains why on my 07 Edwards there is no inscription saying "Made In Japan". TOKAI JOE, what the deal with the Mountain Dew petition? :p
