I have always just assumed that it is toke-eye but i guess it could be toke-aye such as the tokay gekko. Stupid perhaps- but I haven`t really spoken in person to anyone i would consider definitive on this issue- and obviously I don`t speak japanese, I can barely type english!

Oops, all wrong I'm afraid, hehe...

Speaking to several different Japanese friends on many occasions over the years they all always pronounce it "Torkeye"
("tor" as in tortoise or tore a pice of paper, and "eye" rhymes with "guy", as in one of the pair or eyes your reading this with, hehe) - the word as a whole sounds a lot like/rhymes with "Hawkeye".

Here's the company name from the Tokai Japanese website : -

eastsea.jpg

It means "East Sea" in Japanese.

BTW - The same characters are pronounced "Dong Hoi" in Cantonese here in Hong Kong, and "Dong Hai" in Mandarin Chinese used in mainland China.
