ST 50 from Yahoo Japan - work required - Springy

Post by Freddy Floyd » Fri Jun 12, 2015 12:19 am

Hi all,

I returned from holidays to find my two recent acquisitions from Japan waiting for me. The first is a Bacchus Custom with SSH setup - but that's another story. onto the 2nd part. I bid on and won a tokai that the seller was claiming to be a lacquer finish etc but the headstock logo had been degraded to one starting with F. So upon receipt I do my usual and take apart for inspection. I knew from the listing pictures that the pickguard had been changed out so was hoping that all electricals were in there and that neck / body codes matched etc. What I received is a ST 50 body (So not lacquer finish) with rosewood veneer neck (The thin type) has neck plate with serial 9007167, U pickups and the brass grounding plate is there but pots, switch and cap appear to be replaced. Neck code (4=10&11) does line up with body code 4=11 YS)printed in neck pickup pocket) colour code appears correct.

I'm thinking of sticking my Springy maple neck on and trying to bring it to 57 specs.

I'll keep you all posted on progress :o :o :o

@Toes - Pics will come within the next week or two. I will post some pics of my Weddington also. Good to meet a fellow Yamaha fan. I also have a LS-400 Acoustic and an old Dynamic which I stripped off the coating on the top, neck and headstock, then french polished the woodwork. Also had to plug a very bad attempt at fitting classical tuners and refit some correct tuners. Currently redoing frets.

@Jacco - appears to be no stamp on bottom of fret board but there is the stamp in the neck pocket (ST-50) Anybody know if this is normal?

This april stamped ST got a 7xxx serial number while LS production ends around 6400 in 1979 with november stamped guitars. I think LS parts were not stored first & assembled later before given serial numbers like ST models were. ST models had a different productionn scheme than LSs.

Thanks Jacco :) I know that there are variations with production techniques used by Tokai which can made identifying a challenge at times

As promised here are some small formatted pics of the restore to date..

Any help on how to get these to load in the actual post?

New pickguard, knobs and round string retainer on their way as I type. Next is some work to be done on maple replace neck - hand making a bone nut, filling two dings around the 20th fret and plugging holes on rear as neck had been used on a Jap Squier I had in the past.
