I recently got a 1982 Love Rock that has some bonks on the end of the headstock.

I haven't repaired lacquer before, and was looking for advice, products, technique, do's and dont's.

Thanks for the help!

I know bumps are annoying in this area.
Sorry you're having to deal with this on a recent guitar purchase.

I asked a luthier with over 30 years of experience a similar headstock overlay repair question a few years ago.
His advice was to leave it, unless I was prepared to respray the entire headstock, which would mean losing the Love Rock logo
and possibly messing up the Tokai inlay, if I didn't handle it it correctly.
In other words, it's a much tougher repair than you would expect
for such a small area, if you want to achieve professional looking results.
Particularly the bump on the left. The rest just looks like honest wear.

Just touching up damaged spots can often end up looking far worse than the damage it is trying to hide, he suggested. :-?

Bumps and bruises are part of the charm of older guitars - Like Reborn said, patch repairs are often more noticeable than the issue itself.

Besides, it doesn't affect the tone, right?

Agreed. Doesn't affect anything. I don't see it at all when I am playing.

My thought was that this is one of the best playing Les Pauls I have ever put my hands on. Just want to take care of it. ;)
