In the early years.... what year did Tokai quit putting the model number on the last fret? ...and how would you identify which LS model it was ?

It's not as simple as looking up a serial number.... there are lots of curveballs. Some more reading for you:

i don' think so . i think only the reborn and reborn old had the inscription on last fret.
i have one of the first LS80 Love Rock of 1980 and nothing on last fret.
just the serial number on the back head.
so may be the last Reborn were made in 1980?

I have a 1980 Les Paul Reborn with "80" stamped on the last fret.

Model number was put on since the begining of the Les Paul Reborn series in 1978. My 79 LS-80 has it and I have seen 78s with the number engraved into the wood, including 100 models.

Regarding the name on headstock there were very few Les Paul, then Les Paul Reborn, then Reborn Old and finally in 1981 Love Rock untill today.

Regards,
Luis.

The transition from fretboard stamp to headstock sticker was during the Reborn Old era; from my serial number thread:
Last documented LS with fretboard stamp is 0009384 Reborn Old.
First stickered LS is 0009533 which is a Reborn Old.
So around july 1980.
