Is there any risk buying a tokai from a private seller in japan and having the guitar confiscated by customs when shipping to the U.S.??...
Have been cautioned by a very reliable person this may be a problem

for example..........not true always i guess but need to do a good enough research before we do importing tokais to the outside of japan........j

Hi hunter!

I import Tokai's from Japan to Austria about 4-5 times a month. To avoid problems with customs there is a simple rule:

Make sure the seller puts the right Yen amount (i.e. what you paid for) onto the papers. Custom's people are not stupid. Also make sure that it's clearly marked as "used".

If you import a new one you might end up in trouble if it's violating US/EU copyrights. Again: customs people are able to read serial numbers and have internet access (and more).

I guess that's also true for the US of A.

Cheers! Rupert

+1 marked used and no "shenanegans" on the real price. I've sent many (Tokai's included) with no trouble. Note though....the majority are lefties so maybe that throws them off a bit....lol.

Is that the one where he drives his Dad's Porsche into a lake? The one with the Muddy Waters song on the soundtrack?
