According to his online diary, Robert Fripp acquired his black Tokai LP Standard copy from the UK importer in 1984.
Fripp was steered to Tokai after a fellow musician noticed him lugging his late-50s (59 I think) Les Paul Custom around to gigs and nearly had a heart attack ... and recommended he leave the highly prized classic safe at home and buy a Tokai copy for the road.
Fripp's Tokai has been modified with tremolo, Roland synth pickup and controls, and coil taps/phase reversals for each of the stock pickups. He also plays Fernandez LP copies (before they were forced to stop making those) and is having a custom guitar built by a UK builder (Crimson Guitars), which will also be sold to the public as a Robert Fripp model.
