LP style vs 335 style

I would like to know the difference in terms of sound between these two styles of guitar. The reason I'm asking this is because I want to buy an LP guitar, problem is I already have a 335 (the es-100) and I'm wondering if they sound different enough to justify owning the two.

From my point of view hollow body vs solid body is tone vs sustain. I think hollow bodies tone is usually richer.

The "es" is somehow in between because is a semi-hollow body and is a great guitar.

I'd say Les paul models offer massive sustain and a little less tone than the "es".

BTW, when recording I find it quite useful to have available a guitar with no sustain at all. :D
 
Well they're both different animals.

LP's are heavy
ES's are not light, but lighter than a LP

LP's have more sustain

ES's have more tonal variety (to me, anyway)

They sounds different. Which is why I have one of each. :wink:
 
I bought an ES 120 three month ago and constantly swapping pickups / settings.
Part of the difference is the sustain and a certain compression that come with the LP. The chords are tighter and more compressed, riffing is easy. The ES is more of separate tones which make it sound looser.
The first 2 months i tried to get a more solid sound out of the ES until i realized that i shouldn't copy a LP. Its a beast of its own - better suited for clean or nearly clean sounds - Dont try to marshall it it, if you know what i mean. Get a clean channel to the limit and dial in a warm sound and you got it at its best.
 
The LP guitars are straight out rock. Es types are more Blues indie jazz .IMHO
