nato vs. mahogany

.I could be wrong, but I have always thought that nato was some type of composite, not unlike plywood. I try to avoid it at all costs.
 
No idea if it's worth the price difference, but....Nato is generalized or locally used name covering various subspecies of similar large trees which grow mainly in South America & Africa ? said to be like a softer & cheaper form of mahogany (not related) ? often used to make necks & backs on acoustic guitars. Probably a sensible alternative to mahogany, which is said to becoming quite rare now in large useable sections (probably protected species in many areas) :-? .

Nato is basically a cheap eastern mahogany and is used in many musical instruments. Its not as good as mahogany but it's pretty close and much cheaper, thats why alot of lower prices guitars feature nato.
