Been thinking a bit more about the finishes on some of the Tokais I have.

The one that has me pondering most is the blue quilted one - similar to the LR105Q in the link brokentoes kindly posted below:

Well it's a 2004 for sure. They came in a few colours in your quilt.

I haven't been able to determine for sure whether the quilted finish is actually a solid piece of maple or a pretty veneer. I suspect the latter - but am still holding out a little bit of hope I'm wrong :)

Can anybody give me a definitive answer or even a steer before I start having to remove strings and pickups ?

Ah well..the dream was nice while it lasted.

Two veneered finish and one solid - could be worse :)

Just as an aside - I know Tokai made LoveRocks with solid (ie non veneer) flamed finishes: did they also make solid quilted ones ?

HHi guys,

I have seen only 2 Tokais with solid quilt tops - 1983 LS-200V and a 2002 LS-320.
The easiest way to tell is to take out one of the pickups and look into the cavity facing the scratchplate - not the bridge.
If the figure travels into the cavity and touches the mahogany, it is solid top.
Otherwise - and this is generally rule of thumb with quilt - it is veneer.

hope this helps

Peter
